Trek's chances at best picture just increased?

The Academy could increase it to 20 nominations and Star Trek 2009 would still not be nominated for best picture. Sheesh.

It's almost certain to win an assload of MTV Movie and Blockbuster Awards, that's for sure.

I think it has a chance. Maybe not a huge one, but the ceremony needs better ratings so they have to do something drastic like nominating the best summer films.

Hopefully, Michael Bay won´t be nominated. His best work is still ahead of him.

To say the least.

When ARMAGEDDON is the best thing on your resume and that was 11 years ago that's a sign you need to bone up on your filmmaking skills.

CoveTom, art is in the eye of the beholder. I personally consider Norman Rockwell to be a better and much more artistic artist than van Gogh for instance. It's also not an issue of realism for me, I find Goya better than say van Eyck. It just appeals to me differently. I find Star Trek an artistic film. I don't think art needs be complicated or grounded or boring.

I just read an article in the paper yesterday how they invited however many more people to be part of the academy...Seth Rogan was one of them...and there were other inappropriate people as well. I already know the academy is pretty much full of shit...it's how much ad space you can buy and how many of your buddies you can convince to vote for you...payola I tell you...PAYOLA!

I feel that there should be a qualified panel picking this...which IMO the Crapwood actors/directors are not.

The Academy was founded by actors, directors, writers and producers, and its membership has always reflected that it's a movie-industry organization. For the actors and directors to stay out of it now isn't a very realistic expectation for you to hold.

More actors, directors and studio weasels, no doubt. Whom would you consider instead to be "appropriate" and why is Seth Rogan (presumably) not?

Not really, especially with another Twilight movie coming out this year.

Both ceremonies have enough different categories to ensure that TREK wins a few of something. TWILIGHT will nail most of the girl/chick-friendly trophies to be sure but there'll be more young male-oriented categories where TREK has a great shot.

I think they make additions to the Academy based on a person's contributions to movies. Like it or not, Seth Rogen has had a fairly large impact in comedies within the last 3-4 years.

At least where the MTV Movie Awards are concerned, Twilight took home pretty much every major category except Best Villian (Heath Ledger sympathy vote continues), Best Song, and Best Comedic Performance. The four acting categories were split between Twilight and HSM3.

EW has an article about the change in the Best Picture Category. They even list their guesses for the 10 nominees:

Avatar
The Hurt Locker
The Informant!
Invictus
The Lovely Bones
Nne
Public Enemies
Shutter Island
Star Trek
Up

They also asked JJ Abrams about it and he seemed to mock the whole idea of the expansion to 10 nominees:

"Why stop at 10?" he says. "There should be 100 Best Picture nominees, and the show could last all week. Could you imagine being the 101st? Paul Blart!"
