TREK's biggest gamble

Kirk kissing Uhura was an early gamble that I think paid off in many ways.

You read my mind. Today, it would be like two men kissing on screen.

Is that really still such a big thing in the USA?

Scenes such as this -

(taken from Hollyoaks - a soap aimed at teens) would not fly?

It was a big deal 30 years ago when it was the first inter-racial kiss on television.

Trek XI will be Trek's biggest gamble. Star Trek is essentially dead at the moment. A major motion picture at this stage is quite the gamble.

I would have to say too Kirk and Uhura kissing was the biggest gamble. Given the social tension of the day, they took a huge risk of starting an uproar that, at that time, could have killed not only the show, but all of NBC as well. Seems silly when you think about it now...

I don't think Trek has made many big gambles. TNG could be considered a gamble, but it really was a no lose. If the show's a hit, great. If the show tanked, they would have linked that one and only season of it with TOS and beefed up its syndication package.

DS9 was a no-brainer. VOY was the result of knowing two Trek series could exist simultaneously.

ST:TMP was the studio's biggest gamble on Trek - until this year, of course.

ST:TNG was a huge creative gamble for Roddenberry and company, far greater than any other since (again, until this year). Not such a gamble for the studio, though - they'd covered most of their first-year costs between sponsorship advertising and overseas video sales before they green-lighted it.
