Trekkies Against Torture-A Warning To J.J. Abrams

^Exactly. Or the scientists of Regula 1 in Wrath of Khan. Or Valeris in ST6.

I guess torture AGAINST members of the Federation, now that's okay.

First off, I agree with the group's statement that Star Trek is not about torture and its protagonists would never condone the use of it (Enterprise not withstanding.) TNG did a marvellous two parter on the horror, inhumanity, and more importantly, inefficiency of torture.

That being said, I'm not 100% sure why this individual/group feels the need to start a petition such as this. I've never seen Alias, so I don't know if Jennifer Garner's character routinely tortured captured bad guys or not and the only scene in M:I 3 where Cruise tortured anybody that I can recall involved Cruise dangling the antagonist out of a jet and the story/plot adequately punished Cruise's character for such an act.

If the film was being produced by ANYONE involved with 24, then yeah, I'd be worried (that show's more into torture than extreme BDSM afficiandos.) But again, without knowing more of Abrahm's body of work as it pertains to torture, I can't say that there's much need for this site at the moment.

I don't know...I thought TNG's 'Chain of Command' did a good job in showing the horrors of torture. I think in its own small way, Star Trek DID stand up against torture in that episode.

Does this 'Trekkies Against Torture' group think that the best way to deal with a problem is to not address it at all?

War is not a pleasant aspect of human behavior either. However, a film that shows war in all of its horrific deatail is not promoting war, but is actually disparaging it.

Well, torture is bad.

Erm... :wtf:

I'm not sure what else to say.

Of course it is. But all I'm saying is that it's a dramatic device that is no stranger to Star Trek, so I'm having trouble understanding this group's stance on torture in Trek.

Agony booth, anyone? ;)

... I'm not in favour of putting pressure on artists (even Hollywoodland hacks) regarding anything. It's censorship.

It's like anti-abortionists lobbying for TV and films to reflect their views (anyone see Knocked Up?). The best of intentions...

A warning to Abrams?

:guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw:

Bet he's shakin' now.

I don't find dramatized torture entertaining and yeah, torture is bad.

That said, there's zero reason to expect to see the good guys torturing anyone in the new "Star Trek" movie.

These folks have let their anxieties run away with them.

I saw this and my first reaction was "Oh, no, not another joke thread." But this isn't a joke... sigh...

Torture is bad. But there are worse things, and given certain circumstances (say, someone who planted a nuke in downtown Manhattan, and who is, shall we say, RELUCTANT to tell the authorities where it is!)... I think torture would be an acceptable option. Hell, I'd do it myself! Be honest... wouldn't YOU?

Then again, there's also the question of "what constitutes torture?" I mean... is it really TORTURE to humiliate someone, or even just to deprive them of a good night's sleep (hell, if that's the definition, I need to find out the statute of limitations on my upstairs neighbors during college!)

Is administering a truth-agent "torture" or is it something else? Was the episode of ENT where they fooled the Zindi guy that he had been imprisoned with Archer "torture?" If so... I'm 100% behind that form of "torture."

You know what I think? This "Trekkies against Torture" people are children. They may be over the age of 40, but they're still, emotionally, CHILDREN. They probably also think that Bambi gave a realistic portrayal of wildlife...

I'd gladly sign a "Trekkies in Favor of Torture When Necessary and Appropriate" petition. ;)

I will not see this movie unless it has scenes of torture shown against a Bach fugue in grainy black and white cinematography.

Also it must be shot in Algiers. :vulcan:

Wasn't directed at you. I was referring to the website.

Just. Bizarre.

If she'd had an abortion, there wouldn't have been much of a movie. :wtf:

I've only got two comments. One, I think they're just a wee-bit paranoid about what's going on in the movie.

Two, I am in the camp where I feel torture is necessary in some cases. And, if they handle it in a mature and reasonable manner, I have no problem with it appearing in the shows and movies I watch. What I won't go for is a scene where they are torturing someone for the hell of it, no real reason, and it isn't dealt with later on.
