Trekkers Are Lucky

I noticed when I got home from work that CBS Paramount is releasing the first season of Mannix in June. What is significant is that this marks the DVD release of the third Desilu series in production concurrently with Trek (the other being Mission Impossible).

This annoucement made me reflect on how lucky we as Trekkers have been. Whether this new film is a relaunch of sorts or a continuation of a very large and complex mythology (I suspect it's - in a way - both, which excites me terribly), we have - for over 40 years - enjoyed 4 spinoffs, 10 films, and animated series, and many many novels and licensed products of our favorite show.

I look at Mannix, which lasted 8 seasons but hasn't had any sort of continuation, and Mission Impossible, whose modern day continuations basically did away with the mythology of the old show...and I just think...say what you want about JJ Abrams...we're lucky to have the rich mythology and all the different generations we do.

I guess we are pretty fortunate (too bad we don't always see that). Most of the shows that have been on in the last 40 years (including a lot of classics) will never be released on DVD or even turn up on TVLand. Sad really. There was some good stuff back then.

Trekkers are just lucky Paramount found Star Trek to be a viable money maker, and a large one at that. But, to bring it full circle, without those 1970's Trekkies to create the demand we wouldn't have all those spin-offs and movies. :thumbsup:

I agree, and say what you want about Rick Berman too, but we have him to thank for a lot of it.

Really. What would be anyone's choice for a series that SHOULD be on DVD? There's a lot of good ones that were never even released on VHS.

My vote would be for "My World, and Welcome to it".

Funny, how I typed "Windom" in IMDB and the first entries were for "Window".

That and Star Wars.

I feel luckier than Star Wars fans. Lucasfilm being a private company, there's no way to wrest Star Wars from George Lucas' control, regardless of what he does to the property. At least with Star Trek, ultimately the determining factor is what Paramount*'s shareholders will tolerate. You can't destroy the franchise utterly & completely without them taking some notice.

*Or whatever megacorp owns Paramount. I can't be bothered to keep track of such things.
