TrekBBS Friend List?

I don't know, does the "Friend" feature on MySpace serve any purpose? Facebook?

It just provides a quick way to get to other people's profiles, which I do with some regularity, since many of my friends here have photo albums and stuff on their accounts. :)

Eh this just reminds me I have to clean out my private messages again, its almost at the limit. I'm very sentimental.

I have a bad memory when it comes to names or nicks, so the friend's list is useful for me to remember certain people.

RAMA

I generally use my Contacts List to keep a list of people I may need to contact in a jiffy, rather than pushing the boat out further and asking them to be a Friend™. Serves the same purpose, really (well, apart from those wanting to see my private photo album collection) - and my contacts also have that little "+" sign next to their name, which kind-of is a nice touch.

As for Friends™, a select few of them (about a third, I'd say) I had approached to be a Friend™ for one very specific reason (let's just say that it eases the feelings of Loathing within me ;)). A few others I also approached simply because they seemed interesting and friendly on and off the public areas of the board, or had a nice avatar, or had common interests, etc.

Most of the people (i.e. the numerical majority) on my Friends List™ approached me to be their friend. I have always accepted their requests, although I have no idea why they would want to subject themselves to my presence. :p [Neither do we. Is it too late to break our friendships? :p - everyone]

When the system started, I put out some friend requests. Since then, others have sent requests to me. I generally accept them all. I keep thinking that at some point some kind of fun feature set will be implemented by Antony to make use of the Friend List in some interesting way. Maybe it will, maybe it won't, but at least the List is there & waiting if something interesting ever does manifest utilising it.

I have one friend who is a real life friend from off the board. I assume everyone else is, at best, ambivalent about me.

As someone else noted, the main thing that's useful (and fun) about the friends list is when you want to send PMs. It's nice to have all the names and so on right there handy.

The other handy feature is that it allows you to see which of your friends are online at any given time.

There are other ways to do both of these things, of course, but it is pretty convenient to have this nice tidy list all in one place.

I think most people use MySpace & Facebook "friend" feature to see how many people they can get on their list.

I would imagine TrekBBSers not being so childish.

Same here.

I am not sure what use the list serves, but I do find it fun to see who is friends with whom. Quite surprising at times. A look at that list can make a person rise or fall in your estimation. :p

It's why so many of us have "invisible mode" switched on; so we can spring up like sharks.

There's invisible mode?!?!?

I have 18 friends, some of whom I've friended and some who have friended me. The people I have friended are folks whose posts around the boards I enjoy reading and strike a chord with me. Other folks have friended me and I usually accept. I think the friends list does serve a purpose, even if it's only to get people chatting. I've spent quite a bit of time lately getting to know some of my friends better.

Yeah this. I've enjoyed chatting and getting to know some of my TreBBS friends better via PM.

I'll always accept a friends request, I figure if someone wants to be friends with me...well than that's their problem...

I don't care about the friends list, but when people add me, I accept them so they don't think I am a mean and terrible person. Even though I probably am.

I think I have about 20 on my list. I don't think I asked any of them (maybe 1 or 2, I don't really remember). In my experience, the friend list accomplishes absolutely nothing.

It makes you look popular. ;) About a couple of years ago, before Doubleohfive had sent me a request, I had no one on my list. Since then, the list has steadily grown to 11 or 12. I mostly initiate the request if I feel I like or admire a poster's thoughts and input. I doubt having a list has any positive or negative effects, but since the feature is there, people might as well use it.

I was kidding about the "popularity" aspect of it. :D I figure I've been a member of this BBS for a great number of years now, and it would be interesting to have my own set of "cool contacts." Having a list of friends is no different from being part of an in-crowd and people exchanging inside jokes with one another. I don't PRESUME to be other people's friend on this board; if anything, the people I've added are posters whom I regard as fun, insightful, and smart, and they would be quite interesting to meet in person. :) So if you're part of my friends list, consider yourself lucky.

If you feel indifferent or even snobbish about this feature, that's fine. :vulcan: You're not obligated to use it; however, there is no sense trying to debase or dismiss it, either.
