We're shooting on film, 2D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the 'Harry Potter' movie and all that," says Abrams.

via this thread on Star Trek Movies XI+ forum:
Star Trek XII to be shot in 2-D and IMAX

Well I guess I will now only see it in 2-D. No need to waste my time with the 3-D screening.
For the record I would still like the next Trek TV series' pilot to be shot in 3-D and screened in cinemas for marketing purposes as discussed here: Could the next Trek TV series be shot in 3-D?

The article linked to above is really badly written.

Of course, that begs the question: Is Paramount planning a post-conversion 3-D edition of the 2009 film?

Uh, why does the writer suppose that the executives at Paramount bothered to convert parts of Trek 2009 to 3D to show it to Abrams? They thought it would be a bit of a giggle?

Aside from that, Abrams answered the question directly:

It will be converted, for those who want to see it in 3D. But, I wanted to match the look of the first one and shoot it anamorphically.

Maybe the writer just wanted to slip a boilerplate paragraph explaining the current economics of 3D ticket sales in order to show off his superficial "mastery" of what he presumes to be industry arcana.

So if "Star Trek 2" generates anywhere near the business as the first film in 2009, Paramount will certainly have nothing to lose by converting "Star Trek 2" into 3-D in post-production.

So, if the next movie generates good business they'll have a reason to convert it to 3D? No; they'll either convert it to 3D before it's released, or not.

Jesus.

Again, we're concentrating on the SPFX.

Stop it with the blessed SPFX!

Shoot it on film and put all the money on a decent script. C'mon, guys this is a no-brainer and I'm not even in the Entertainment Business.
