Trek XI music

I may have missed this if it was posted at some other time (very likely) but I saw in a list of cast and credits Jerry Goldsmiths' name. Perhaps we're going to hear his version of the theme in the movie. After having him in the last three films it will be odd having someone else behind the music. Will be interesting to see where this soundtrack will end up ranking with the others.

The film has got Michael Giacchino as the composer. (The Incredibles, M:I-III). I'm very optimistic about this part of the movie, I expect the best Trek film score since Cliff Eidelmann's TUC, at least. :)

Jerry Goldsmith wrote a great score for TMP and reprised it well for TFF.

Sadly, his three TNG scores were bland and repetitive. The main theme for FC was okay, but the rest of the score was dull. That said, I'd like to hear echoes of his fanfare in the new movie.

I suspect we'll see it on the teaser though.

It was Yahoo movies that had Michael Giacchino along with Goldsmith and Alexander Courage, that had me assuming we'll here the movie fanfair at least.

Goldsmith obliged with the Courage fanfare during the Captain's Log in TMP (having initially been promised that he could record completely original music), so I'd presume Giacchino will provide us with some musical quotations.

I totally agree. Even if it's not even written, I'm pretty sure we'll be happy with the results. :)

We GOTTA hear Courage's Fanfare. Those first four notes are as exalted and eternal as any of the characters or the Enterprise itself.

Two things... music is there to serve a specific storytelling purpose. Ideally, when you watch a flick, you come out not really remembering too much of the music, but just remembering the emotional state that the music evoked in you. Orchestral music is excellent in this regard, simply because the overall range that can be performed by an orchestra is much wider than that which can be performed, say, by a blues quartet, or by Evan Chen and his funky-beat synthesizer... ;) You can have big bombastic stuff... massive dissonance... soft subtle (almost unnoticeable) things... sadness, energy, rage... YOU NAME IT.

Still... just because we know who's composing the score, and we ASSUME it's likely to be performed by a full orchestra... that means nothing. As far as we know, the composer could make the entire thing to be performed by the "Dueling Banjo duo."

Now, bear that in mind... and squeal like a pig, boy! ;)
