Trek xI is the Undiscovered Country

I posted this at IMdb.com and it got quite a response. So even though I am a lurker I am going post it here. these are my thoughts about the film.


I was very nervous about this film when I heard about the changes. I grew up on Kirk,Spock and Bones. So Star Trek is a major part of my life. At first some of the changes were a little hard to swallow. The look seemed off to me in the beginning, and some of the plot point's were disconcerting. But I remembered Kirks words in the Undiscovered country " People can be very frightened of change."

Thats when I put my frame of mind in another place. I wanted a good movie that had action but was character based. Something that retains the spirit of what came before. Something that will make my little boy dream of ships called Enterprise. Something that will carry the legacy forward for future generations. This is a movie that wasn't made for me. To quote Kirk again " Its about the future Madam chancellor." This film is the Undiscovered country, this film is the future. This is my sons and daughters Star Trek. When they think of Enterprise they will think of this crew and this ship. And I am happy for them, for I think the legacy will be carried on. And I will enjoy sharing these moments with them.

For the purist, I understand your points of view. But we had our ship and crew, And "all good things must come to an end." It's time for the Next Generation to take command. Let their Enterprise leave spacedock and Boldly go. We can watch the wonder in our children's eyes when they meet our heroes for the first time. And maybe we can remember the first time we fell in love with a lady called Enterprise.

But you're right...we had our crew and our missions -- this is the future of Trek whether it be good or bad...and it's all riding on this movie and subsequent offerings.... I know if I was younger and just getting introduced to Trek thru this movie I'd definitely be hittin up the older material....so you have to think that there will be some people turned on to the original. Who knows maybe we'll even get TOS back in proper syndication again...as it should be. But if not, yeah at least we got the privledge to see the to the "originals" -- the first ones to boldly go.....

Luckily, being 24 I'm still on hanging on by a string and enjoying new-age productions like nuBSG and X-Men-- so if this is well done I'm quite certain I'll enjoy it!

And you are right, this movie needs to be made in a way that my 13 year old cousin becomes enamored and wants to see this just as much as any other new action/science-fiction film this year.

Thank you for the replies. I want Trek to live as long as possible. And I think Abrams will accomplish that goal. That being said I am very excited for this new film. I was able to get over my previous objections and just look at it differently. I know that if something cant change, it will die eventually. And I dont want that to happen. I would have a rushing river of trek then a stagnant pool. Let's face it, for a long time we have had that stagnant pool. Now we have the river even though it looks a little different.

As I've said, we've still got everything that came before. Alot of what came before eventually got bogged down in it's own lore and rules. The beauty of this production is that we get to reboot in a round about way, but still retain the original canon as part of our "Gods eye view" canon. It all still counts - so much as a fictional canon can.

When I first heard about this film I had that quote in my head.

Star Trek is moving froward, with us or without us, it's moving forward, we can move with it, or be left behind, change is the natural state of the universe, it is always changing, forever changing into something new.

The point is, we do have a choice, we can embrace the change or be frightened of it, I choose to embrace the change.

To the undiscovered country, The future....

Although it might be hard to swallow but this film apparently leaves untapped Gary Mitchell, Nancy Crater, Finnegan, Talos IV, Organia, etc. My mind boggles at the thought of the re-imagined concepts. I don't care if you see them as retreads: that stuff was good and needs to be re-introduced!

I'd prefer they introduce Gary as a friend Kirk had after Pike got him to go to the Academy. (Originally Kirk was apparently ahead of Gary and was one of his instructors. Now maybe they went together.)

As Captain of the Enterprise, Kirk requests Gary as a member of his crew, with all the nastiness happening in one film. No seeing him in one and then waiting for the next film for the other shoe to drop.

Knowing movie-makers these days, especially JJ, no doubt the two-film idea IS what they'll do, tho'.

Whichever, I'll be looking forward to seeing Liz Dehner introduced as a new crew member too, tho'. It'll be an "uh-oh" moment we'll all be waiting for.

Actually it's about to become cooler than it's ever been, at least as far as its mainstream appeal goes. As for the sequel, my guess is that the Star Trek reboot sequel will reintroduce (and possibly reimagine) the Klingons. Think of The Dark Knight, the Batman reboot sequel which had his long-standing arch-nemesis the Joker. I have a strong hunch Abrams and company are inclined to take that same route with Star Trek.

What I would do, but I don't think it's possible anymore. Is have Kirk teach a class at the academy a semester after the events of the movie. In that class is a young punk like he used to be named Gary Mitchell. Have kirk take on Pikes roll in recruiting Gary Mitchell. Kirk can see a lot of his former self in the young cadet. Unfortunately it all goes wrong and Gary becomes the Anti Kirk.

Indications have been the 24th century is depicted with Nero and "certain people" who are holding him prisoner.

I don't believe anyone's being reimagined.

This isn't a reimagining of Trek. It's a revision of the timeline.

I love this. You know, i never thought of it that way. It makes a lot of sense. "Don't let it end this way."
