Trek-XI is gonna flop f***** big!

Yeah, it's possible to get wrapped up in details to the point where you stop being able to see the forest for all the trees. I think it should be fun overall, and so should the detail-wrangling, but that's just my take on it.

I agree with the others who believe that Paramount isn't doing anything wrong here. The release date for the movie is still ten months away, which is plenty of time for them to do a proper publicity build up.

As far as Comic Con goes, most of the attendees there already know about the new Star Trek movie. It's the rest of the non-SF fan population whom Paramount needs to reach if they want this to be a big hit.

As for the sombreros, it's fun. Keep 'em coming!

Hakuna Matata, my friends. Why argue about something no one here has any power to control?

I'm a Star Trek fan. I've never really identified with the whole "Trekkie" culture, but I think Star Trek has had a lot of good things to say about what the world is and what the world can be. Star Trek was a genius way to make social commentary.

So maybe the latest movie will be good. Maybe it will flop.

Either way, Star Trek has done and is doing its job of making people think about the way they perceive the world.

In the meantime, can't we all just get along?

Oh geez, not this crap again. This is why Trek is such at a downfall nowadays... I swear. Give the movie a chance. If you don't wanna see it, don't, and leave it alone. I was skeptical at first, but the more and more I read about it I think this movie maybe worth its wait. I'm not gonna criticize something before it's out.

Nerd Hysteria loves a vacuum.

It's true that old Trek (TNG & Co.) has developed a certain aura of crap among non-fans. And fans. Which is why Abrams is trying to reinvent Trek completely, doing a 2008 version of TOS.

Since the advertizing juggernaut has not yet kicked in, we DO NOT KNOW what the film's reception will be.

I never said I don't want to see it. I am just afraid that they are running out of time to bring this movie to the attention of the non-Trekkers.

Well putting the sombrero discussion aside for a sec, I really truly hope the movie will be great. I will be an optimist about it. What i am worried about is how much revenue it will generate. For some reason i have a feeling that if it doesn't do well with box office ticket sales, it could be the final nail in the coffin and there could be no more Trek. Don't get me wrong, just because a movie doesn't do well at the box ofice doesn't mean it is a bad movie, we have many examples of this. I just want it to make money so we will get more Trek in the years to come.

:wtf: 10 months. That's ~300 days. How much time do you need?

They started selling Dark Knight a few months ago. Indiana Jones also only got a few months of ad buys.

Meanwhile, Ultra Violent's advertising was ENORMOUS and it flopped.

Blanketing the market with mentions doesn't do you any good if your product isn't appealing.

It's cool, I just get tired of coming to this forum and all people seem to do is criticize any new Trek that comes out. It's just getting old :)

Maybe they are trying to make sure this movie is a success, and that's why the hush-hush about it and the wait. I can wait until May, 2009 for this movie. I'd rather watch it the original release date, but I would want to see a good movie, too.

Someone in this thread brought up a good time to premiere the new trailer. SUPERBOWL!

Paramount's decision to sit out Comic-Con won't negatively affect the "Star Trek" film one bit. It's a fannish tempest in a teapot.
So says one of our grizzled elders. What do others say?

"Comic-Con has become the single most relevant event for the movie industry now. All you have to do to see that is to look at the films that are successful right now, and it's all comic-book event movies," said Jon Favreau, the director of the hit film "Iron Man." "Last year, before we went to Comic-Con, nobody was talking about 'Iron Man,' but by the end of our presentation to those 6,500 fans [in the main hall] they were sending instant messages and writing blog posts, and we instantly had a buzz around the world."

"You ignore San Diego, and you'll pay the price," Godsick said [Hollywood veteran Jeffrey Godsick, the president of marketing at Fox-Walden]. "If you don't have a presence there, fans will assume you're hiding something. Comic-Con is the ultimate platform for reaching the fans that are most passionate, the ones that line up for the opening Friday night. The presentations have become so elaborate and strong too that it's dramatically upped the experience for fans. So they expect a lot."

What about the movies that become blockbusters that don't have a presence at Comic Con? Doubt there's really any real hard correlation. Star Trek had a presence at Comic-Con last year, and did again this year (to a lesser extent.) Is media hype through the roof?

As the old saying goes....."Absence makes the heart grow fonder"...and after Nemesis and Enterprise i am quite happy to see Trek have a bit of a breather, have a good clean out, and start afresh next year with what i think will be a very exciting rebirth of our beloved franchise.

the big difference i guess between why it was so important to promote iron man last year and for trek to get mostly a pass is that iron man wasnt that well known outside of people who actually read comics.

and the awareness and coverage at comic con is bigger then the comics industry now.

people know what trek is.
they have enough time to sell this movie to the public.
