^ I don't mind the avatars, some of them are quite clever, including yours. It's the references in posts that are annoying. I don't expect anyone to stop pushing the meme simply because I no longer find it amusing, just throwing in my 2c.

While I agree that they shouldn't be advertising this early and that they should have been at comic con, I still think that this movie is going to flop.

I'm sorry to say that Trek has a very niche audience and it appeals to that group. I'm not saying that it won't get some attention, but I don't think that it'll be enough to affect the film in the long run. Trek is something that doesn't appeal to Joe Sixpack or the much desired teen/early 20s demographics. Star Trek is seen as a nerdy and geeky program and let's face it a lot of people will avoid this because of that stigma.

High school and college kids will most likely not see it. True there are probably big explosions but Johnny Quarterback isn't going to say to his entourage "Hey lets go see that Star Trek movie" because they're worried about their popularity. I've seen this first hand. When Nemesis and I came out the High School Quarterback of my school did go see it at the same time that I went to see it. When the movie was over one of his friends spotted him leaving the theatre and there was a mad dash of texting. Suddenly his popularity (he was Mr. Popular) fell like a rock. By the time he graduated he was just starting to recover some of the popularity he'd lost. If I recall correctly even his girlfriend (they had been together for about two years) broke up with him over it because he was a geek.

Sorry I don't think it's going to do well. I think that this will be the permanent death of Trek. The budget is entirely too high and I doubt that they'll reach what was spent on it + marketing (to be considered a success you need to make at least 25% of what it cost to make over the break even point). I hope that I'm wrong.

Ah, one has to love stereotypes. Not.
I think the film 'High School Musical' has something to say about such niche-thinking.

After showing the teaser to some of my friends (who aren't trek-fans) they said that they will see this new movie.
The fact that we get a new cast, a now well known director/producer and (probably) a completely different approach to the franchise the chances are quite good that this film will perform well at the box-office.

I hope that I'm wrong.

I'm sure you do.

All you people who think that Paramount should be throwing millions of dollars into advertising NOW need to get a clue. They're nowhere close to blowing it. There was a teaser trailer out 17 months before the release date. What more do you want? An all out ad blitz on radio, TV, and print now through Mother's Day?

Is Paramount thinking that old fans are going to make this movie a hit?

No. That's why they're rebooting.

Without any pre-buzz, without any significant interests to be raised?

Please. Qunito can now fart and 10 threads would be started on it. As I've said before, we're trekkers...we're going to eat this movie up like a fat girl and cake. And what "pre-buzz" are you wanting? The movie is still 10 months out.

The ones that don't make their movie plans 10 months in advance? You mean those people?

No...as movies aren't really advertised 10 months out. How much "pre-buzz" is being trumped up about that new Wolverine movie now? Or how much buzz was being generated in September of last year for Dark Knight?

What's that? None you say?

Sorry to rant, but for Trek not having a significant presence in Comic Con is making me see red.

Those fools! All Star Trek needs to reinvigorate it is a booth...at a comic book convention...300 days before it's release!

How can Paramount fuck that up? Didn't it see how Comic Con helped Iron Man?

Well, Iron Man was a comic...and I doubt Comic Con made the movie a hit.

In short, the average movie goer has no idea about Trek and wouldn't care if he did know and he's not going to mark his calender and cancel his May plans because of a movie.

You fail at thinking like other people. You nullified yourself with your opening salvo of "I am a hardcore Trek fan".

Great post..and I agree. I understand the angst of the OP. I was at comic-con and it was strange not seeing TREK XI in the halls. But it is stil 10 months aways so I am willing to let it go..for now..

Why all the sombrero hate? I personally think it will never stop being funny. To each their own, I suppose.

As for the movie, I'm sure it won't tank. Maybe it won't be that popular, but it won't completely bomb.

Why all the sombrero hate?

Having every other avatar feature an originally unfunny joke of a sombrero + half the posts on the STXI forum being a sarcastic mexican hat reference... for the past couple of months...

gets old, and boring and pathetic. Fast.

Paramount's decision to sit out Comic-Con won't negatively affect the "Star Trek" film one bit. It's a fannish tempest in a teapot.

The studio will spend a lot of money promoting the movie in the mainstream media. Probably will be the first Trek movie with an expensive spot on the Super Bowl next year.

The "X-Files" movie flopped because it sucked - which is also probably the reason that Fox didn't spend oodles of money promoting the low-budget film. Anyone in the business who looks to that movie or Fox's treatment of it for a "lesson" about making movies or promoting them must be a beginner.

And keep up the sombreros, guys. :techman:

If there was an exec who said "We need to spend alot of money at ComicCon even though those people are pretty much the only guaranteed audience we'll have in May" he would've been fired.

The point of advertising is to attract new people. The people at ComicCon or any other -Con, -Fest, or -vention aren't new.

Keep up the toad too!

All this alarmism. Firstly the movie isn't being geared to please "hardcore Trekkies" that part of the plan is a well known fact by this time. Its being made to appeal to a broader group and MAKE NEW TREK FANS.

If JJ's track record with secrecy should tell us anything, it is it causes his work to be anything but a "flop" (a badly abused word on the internet).

Just cause they haven't spilled the beans to your satisfaction doesn't in any logical manner equal a forthcoming failure.

Many, Science Fiction fans in general, and Trek fans in particular really need to learn to pull back their egos and myopic points of view on what they claim to love so much.

From your lips to God's ear! It's is my hope as well that Paramount advertises the snot out of this movie. That hasn't been done for any other Trek film, but this is the one with the biggest budget and this is the one in which TPTB have boasted that its mission is to attract non-trek fans. I'm hopeful that JJA & Paramount learn from Nolan & Warner Bros.'s approach with TDK. Now there is a successful marketing campaign!

Oh, and I'm bored by the sombrero schtick. It was mildly humorous at first but wore thin very quickly. I like to run with a joke but know when to move on to the next bit. Move on to the next bit, please...

No it didn't. :techman:
I agree with 22 Stars.
Me too, the whole William Shatner playing the nacelles was funnier.

Please stop with the mexican hat thing, it stopped being funny about three weeks ago.
Amen Brother!, I never thought it was funny

Please stop with the mexican hat thing, it stopped being funny about three weeks ago.
No it didn't. :techman:
Right, it was four weeks ago.

Please stop with the mexican hat thing, it stopped being funny about three weeks ago.
You mean it actually STARTED being funny?

But yes, enough's enough ffs.

You guys tell me who's in charge of the "mexican hat thing"/"sombrero schtick" and I'll be sure to pass the word along. ;) Meanwhile, try not to beat up on people for being able to see the fun in it, okay? Like the badgers and the sloth wars did before, this, too, will run its course.

T'Cal: speaking of wearing thin, the constant chorus of "they should promote this movie (Star Trek) exactly the same way The Dark Knight was promoted" you're injecting into every thread here lately is becoming transparent. It's okay for you to hold an opinion, but we get it, already. Message received; over and out.

Can we also get past the myth that since its "Star Trek", therefore its too niche to be appreciated by new people? or is somehow so special that its beyond lesser people understanding?

Just because its "Star Trek" isn't sufficient reason or a valid excuse for it to fail.

If a movie series based on some arch-self important literature like LoTR's can translate into a series of box office successes, an action adventure movie based on a 60's tv series shouldn't have a problem.

Awww, I like those books.

So do I (most of the time, I've a love/hate thing for Tolkien's writing. Love all the detail but sometimes I just wish he'd remember to get back to telling the story. The Two Towers was tedious - book not the movie) but they do tend to take themselves real serious, more so then there "prequel" ever did.

Just cause we geeks are all wrapped up in the particulars of a series/show/piece of literature doesn't mean other can't as well find things to like about it. As Trek fans we think Star Trek is "special" it tends to blind us to its flaws and view it from a rigid unchangeable point of view that doesn't allow us to think of it beyond those limits.

Tolkien is very heavy, in a way that Trek couldn't eve think to be surely there are broad elements in Star Trek which can be executed in a way that shall appeal to a strata of people in the hands of the right person.

I think I might be railing agianst nerd-elitism...
