While I agree that they shouldn't be advertising this early and that they should have been at comic con, I still think that this movie is going to flop.
I'm sorry to say that Trek has a very niche audience and it appeals to that group. I'm not saying that it won't get some attention, but I don't think that it'll be enough to affect the film in the long run. Trek is something that doesn't appeal to Joe Sixpack or the much desired teen/early 20s demographics. Star Trek is seen as a nerdy and geeky program and let's face it a lot of people will avoid this because of that stigma.
High school and college kids will most likely not see it. True there are probably big explosions but Johnny Quarterback isn't going to say to his entourage "Hey lets go see that Star Trek movie" because they're worried about their popularity. I've seen this first hand. When Nemesis and I came out the High School Quarterback of my school did go see it at the same time that I went to see it. When the movie was over one of his friends spotted him leaving the theatre and there was a mad dash of texting. Suddenly his popularity (he was Mr. Popular) fell like a rock. By the time he graduated he was just starting to recover some of the popularity he'd lost. If I recall correctly even his girlfriend (they had been together for about two years) broke up with him over it because he was a geek.
Sorry I don't think it's going to do well. I think that this will be the permanent death of Trek. The budget is entirely too high and I doubt that they'll reach what was spent on it + marketing (to be considered a success you need to make at least 25% of what it cost to make over the break even point).
I hope that I'm wrong.
All you people who think that Paramount should be throwing millions of dollars into advertising NOW need to get a clue. They're nowhere close to blowing it. There was a teaser trailer out 17 months before the release date. What more do you want? An all out ad blitz on radio, TV, and print now through Mother's Day?
Is Paramount thinking that old fans are going to make this movie a hit?
No. That's why they're rebooting.
Without any pre-buzz, without any significant interests to be raised?
Please. Qunito can now fart and 10 threads would be started on it. As I've said before, we're trekkers...we're going to eat this movie up like a fat girl and cake. And what "pre-buzz" are you wanting? The movie is still 10 months out.
The ones that don't make their movie plans 10 months in advance? You mean those people?
No...as movies aren't really advertised 10 months out. How much "pre-buzz" is being trumped up about that new Wolverine movie now? Or how much buzz was being generated in September of last year for Dark Knight?
What's that? None you say?
Sorry to rant, but for Trek not having a significant presence in Comic Con is making me see red.
Those fools! All Star Trek needs to reinvigorate it is a booth...at a comic book convention...300 days before it's release!
How can Paramount fuck that up? Didn't it see how Comic Con helped Iron Man?
Well, Iron Man was a comic...and I doubt Comic Con made the movie a hit.
In short, the average movie goer has no idea about Trek and wouldn't care if he did know and he's not going to mark his calender and cancel his May plans because of a movie.
You fail at thinking like other people. You nullified yourself with your opening salvo of "I am a hardcore Trek fan".
Please stop with the mexican hat thing, it stopped being funny about three weeks ago.
Why all the sombrero hate?
Why all the sombrero hate?
Having every other avatar feature an originally unfunny joke of a sombrero + half the posts on the STXI forum being a sarcastic mexican hat reference... for the past couple of months...
gets old, and boring and pathetic. Fast.

Paramount's decision to sit out Comic-Con won't negatively affect the "Star Trek" film one bit. It's a fannish tempest in a teapot.
The studio will spend a lot of money promoting the movie in the mainstream media. Probably will be the first Trek movie with an expensive spot on the Super Bowl next year.
Thirded.Agreed.No it didn't.Please stop with the mexican hat thing, it stopped being funny about three weeks ago.![]()

You guys tell me who's in charge of the "mexican hat thing"/"sombrero schtick" and I'll be sure to pass the word along.Oh, and I'm bored by the sombrero schtick. It was mildly humorous at first but wore thin very quickly. I like to run with a joke but know when to move on to the next bit. Move on to the next bit, please...
