Trek XI has Good Will Hunting vibe?

I appreciate it though. I thought that I missed something from all the flaming.

Anyone else getting a "Good Will Hunting" vibe from the movie. That is, a movie set on a college campus about the students and faculty there? Based on the spoilers so far, it seems to be about Kirk's campus experience at Starfleet Academy. I just don't see the Enterprise being a major part of the movie until the last act like in Star Trek IV. I'm not sure how exciting or entertaining that kind of movie will be.
Nah... it's not a movie about a bunch of kids on a college campus.

Kirk (like Saavik) would have been a full Lieutenant at the time he took the Kobayashi Maru test at his command school course, after having had at least seven years of active-duty experience.

He MIGHT have had a few cadets on that cruise (again, like with Saavik's cruise) under his effective command, though he would have been subordinate to a REAL captain during that cruise (perhaps our mysterious Pakistani friend?), just as Saavik was subordinate to Captain Spock (with Admiral Kirk along "for the ride"). These COULD have included Chekov et al... though it seems a bit contrived.

We know, without question, that this film takes place in a variety of timeframes. We have good reason to believe that ONE of those timeframes will be during Kirk's command school course at the Academy. We have NO reason to conclude that this makes up more than 15 minutes or so of the total film. And regardless, we know that neither Kirk, nor Spock, nor McCoy, nor Scotty would be "kids" at that point.
There is the B-plot of Romulan interference from the future; however, that doesn't seem to be at the heart of the movie. The core is the relationship between Kirk and Spock. The time-traveling menace seems to be just a plot device to visit the different parts of Kirk's and Spock's lives. This kind of movie could be very good drama, but it could also end up with boring self-absorbed drivel.
I'm in a minority here, but I'm still not convinced that the film necessarily DOES involve "time travel" (in any sense but the "one day at a time, moving forward" one). And I suspect that we'll see that Bana's character has a deeper relationship to Spock (Nimoy) than anyone's really thinking right now. ;) I'm not even convinced he's actually "the villain" though there are people here who will gladly flame me for just tossing that out. Let 'em...

Not unless they have Kirk mopping up the Kobayashi Maru simulator one night when he decides to secretly solve it. So, part of it takes place at the academy; Are we supposed to get a 'Revenge Of The Nerds' or 'Animal House' Vibe too?
"Was it over when the Klingons bombed Pearl Harbor??? HELL NO!!!"

I'd rather like it to be a riff on Thomas The Tank Engine.

Which begs the question - who would play The Fat Controller?

:D

You may be right about that. For all we know the entire movie could be a mindmeld experience with Spock so that we don't really travel back in time but we see Spock's memories. I'm sure it would be more involved than that, but maybe you're onto something.

I am SO getting a Harold and Kumar vibe from this, don't ask me how, tho...

also, Kal Penn needs to be in the movie as son of the Pakistani Captain, who's with me? :P

I can see where that joke's going even before it goes there.
Then my work here is done.

:D

(BTW - where was it going? I wasn't too sure, myself. I had options).

:D

Nope. You won't make me say it. It's like invoking Beetlejuice around here. Only causes trouble.:p

I don't get it.
