That's not going to happen.
Well technically someone could travel back in times with the blueprints for hte Defiant, build that instead and it would be called the Enterprise, that doesnt mean its the same ship :-P

Wow, that's awesome. Very nicely done and funny in some moments (especially the last seconds of the first part).
if nero is responsible for the altered enterprise maybe it's due to some tech he left behind during the first attack that they were able to back-engineer? they've certainly shown they can do that. also it seems that nero's attacks happen over the course of many years over different times. the enterprise was still being built even after the first attack happened. that's quite some time there. certainly gives them enough time to study some tech that's left behind or even just study scans made of his ship.

I totally agree on both counts: I agree that perhaps it just looks different to us -- the audience -- but is supposed to be the same. And I agree that we won't know that for sure until we see the film (or get more info).It's the same ship, as far as I'm concerned. It just looks different. I don't think they actually NEED to give us an in-film explanation for the difference in looks. I'm OK with just saying it's supposed to be the same look, but updated for a 2009 film. However, that's not to say that Abrams agrees with my personal views on that.

Doubtless there will be a throwaway line, a narrative sop intended to placate the obsessives, which can be interpreted as an explanation but won't matter to the new viewers.

The best thing this movie can do is to take its altered timeline and just run with it, and never even attempt to reconcile itself with TOS.
And the best thing CBS could do is come up with a Captain April TV series, that adheres to, and builds upon, the established timeline, and takes full advantage of the fact that Star Trek is, and always has been, best suited for television.

I'm actually loving the fact that the new movie will pave the way for a new-looking enterprise, never to return to the 1960s TOS version - not because I dislike that design, just because I love the look of the JJprise, and can't wait to see it put through it's paces!
I think the more changes the better, I can easily imagine 40 years of stories told from a new timeline where you occasionally have an episode or movie which jumps back to the original timeline we all know (similar to the occasional jumps to the mirror episode).
I can just imagine the cliffhangs with people wondering "omg are they going to restore the timeline!!!!!"... to be continued :-P

Thats not a bad idea actually, the Romulan heritage giving her face a bit of a modification as it manifested. Problem solved.
Which means, essentially, that you're looking forward to a new show, with a new ship and a new crew. And that's just fine with me. I just want them to be honest about it. Different ship, different crew, all-new stories... I'm all for it. The main quibble is that we're being told it's "the same." The folks who love the new stuff and dislike the old stuff aren't really getting anything out of the bargain, calling it "the NCC-1701." It's a new ship, and as a new ship, it's fine. I believe that one poster here who's seen substantial parts of the movie - carsondyle - has indicated either here or at www.therpf.com that there's a dearth of what fans think of as traditional beauty shots in this movie (for example, the slow three-quarters and profile shots that we're used to).
