^ Pity we never see them do it. Whenever someone is pursuing another ship and knock it to sublight they instantly drop from warp to engage it at sublight as well and then engage at very close ranges.
One reason might have been that phasers use to not work at warp and they are the primary weapon in Star Trek but that changed when we saw a Nebula and the Prometheus duke it out with phasers at warp. Though how close would you need to be to hit a sublight object if you were at warp with a phaser?
Of course the real world reason is that it makes better TV to have your opponents engage within a few kilometres of each other but it would be nice to see a bit more variety in starship battles on Trek.
