Trek Shifting with the Times

Underfunded

Ensign
Red Shirt
I have been watching old TNG and DS9 episodes and i have noted that when the characters want to start boozing they order synthehol. Well now that Mary Ja Wanna is legal, will the writers invent Bongethol or some such nonsense?

No, they'll invent Chakotay (and whatever weird device he uses).

I believe the point of synthehol was so the characters could binge drink and not have a hangover.
There's no equivalent reason to create a synthetic version of cannabis.

It could be a case that the need to get high might be gone if people are generally happy with their lives and don't need to escape from them. On "less evolved" planets like ours currently, it's likely a totally different story...

Have we even seen alcohol in Discovery? Maybe "Magic...", but I'm struggling to remember it being mentioned.

Well, Tilly did get high, albeit by accident, on DISCO last year. And the fact that she used the word "high" to describe her state implies that altered states are not unknown in the 23rd century . . . :)

That was on the Klingon Homeworld. Which automatically means it is evil. :techman:

I'm not following. I think i'm close to losing my trekkie credentials.

Also Paul spent several episodes off his face on sporestuff, a side effect they kinda dropped by the end of the season.

Well that would make "it is green" a lot funnier.

Anyway, alcoholic beverages are quite common in the 24th century.

Saurian Brandy
Romulan Ale
Tranya
Klingon Blood Wine
Aldebaren Whiskey
"Green"
Kanar

Noticed none of them are from Earth though... Chateau Picard? Apparently Earth stopped exporting alcohol in the 24th century

Slightly off topic, but I discovered a bit of stealthy product placement in Voyager

I would also like to think that anyone in the 24th century can freely use cannabis because they will have figured out it is somewhere between harmless and beneficial.

I think those ended up being the same thing.
Data's Green Liquor in Relics was indeed Aldebaran Whiskey. No idea about Scotty's Green Liquor in By Any Other Name. I guess we could apply Occam's Razor and say they're the same thing, but around here that's likely asking for trouble.

I thought about that. But the poster specified 24th century, so I went with what we know.

At least in 2364 Federation children are baffled that anyone would want to do something that made them feel good at the expense of their health for no other sake.

Marijuana doesn't have as many negative effects as alcohol so there's less need to make a fake version.
