Trek Relaunch: Thank you!

Hello! This is addressed to the writers among us…

I’ve been on quite the odyssey for the past couple of years. My general approach to reading series is to try to wait and read all of them in a row rather than waiting piecemeal, unless it’s something I’m particularly hot-and-bothered-with – as an example, I’d not read any of the Game of Thrones books until the series forced me to, so even after having succumbed I’ll only have to wait for two more [for older fans I managed to wait out the Riverworld series until they were all done, for example].

So to get this back to Trek, while I was a prolific Treklit reader when that was all there was [esp. TOS], I’d not read many of the TNG-DS9-VOY era novels until they were all off the air. I did read the DS9 relaunch a few years back and adored it, have read and loved New Frontier as they came out, and was a loyal Vanguard reader. Two years ago I finally got around to starting the grand project. I’ve topped off the DS9 relaunch, read all the TNG novels from the A Time to… series through the most current, as well as Cold Equations, Slings and Arrows, Section 31, Titan, DTI, Destiny, Typhon Pact, The Fall, and I’m almost done w/the Dominion War books. I’m looking forward to Full Circle, as Voyager is the only “current” thing I’ve not gotten to yet. After that, ENT and the origins.

In two years, the only non-Trek fiction I’ve read was the last Stephen Donaldson Covenant book, which puts a nice cherry on the whole “waiting for series to end” bit.

While the quality has inevitably varied over time and between authors, this is intended as a general and truly heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in this effort. The relaunch idea has turned what was an interesting way of expanding the shared universe we all love into the living and breathing continuation of that universe and all it sometime stands for. What you are all doing is what Star Trek is today [and this is from a non-JJ hater lol].

I was watching an early TNG ep with Riker and Troi dancing around their relationship issues and my first thought was “this is an old married couple with a kid to me”.

As my then-ridiculed t-shirt in high school said, “Star Trek Lives”...and for many of us, you are the reason why.

Thank you, and I look forward to what you will all bring us in the future.

Exactlly what i thin "0 I wish all these awesome writers could have wrote the scripts. Damn what a great show on the screen all these books would be !!And also from me a bit thank you from the heart to all authors!

I completely agree with the OP here. Even though I absolutely love the JJ Abrams movies, at this point when I think of current Trek, my first thought is of the books. While the movies are a lot of fun, they don't really capture the feel of Prime Trek quite the way the books do.

I've been collecting and reading the books since the late 80s and I have to say that, for the most part, I have enjoyed the ride. Especially the last 15 years or so have been a lot of fun. The books keep Star Trek alive for me since there is not a current running TV show. I have to add that the books have actually been more entertaining than anything I've seen on screen in movies or TV. It's rare for me not to enjoy a Star Trek book these days. Occasionally a story falls flat for me, but I understand that the enjoyment of a story has a lot of variables and is a very subjective thing. So, even though I might not have enjoyed a novel the first time through I have found that quite often a second reading at a different time of my life can change my perspective. I too would add my thanks to all the great authors who have given me so much pleasure all these years. I hope we will see many more new adventures for a long time to come.

...an update! I'm now caught up with "current" Trek, having finished the VOY relaunch as well. I can see why they're popular, I've thoroughly enjoyed them... bringing characters back from the dead has become such a cliche it's hard to handle it well, but I think it was in this case.

I'm on to the ENT relaunch now!

My thanks to all concerned continue unabated, I'm now waiting for the new ones with bated breath...

yes same here, very much in appreciation of the relaunch series. I'm still starting out on my journey and it's all very exciting (starting with: trial by error ; lives of dax; stitch in time ; vulcan's soul trilogy) and just finished off Hollow Men yesterday, it's so entertaining going through in my mind, all the intertwining plots between the books and TV, and having the characters you loved being developed more. Got so many books in front of me, it's a nice problem to have :)

I've read bits and pieces of the post-series books, but now i'm starting with a fresh slate, with Avatar Book 1. I'm looking forward to this journey of reading.

In complete agreement. I started my Trek reading habit with the first New Frontier novel & DS9 relaunch. I really have enjoyed the past several years of Trek-lit, even though lately I've fallen behind it's been a fun ride. Thank you for continuing the journey.

Hear hear! I totally agree, the Relaunch era is the best Prime Trek story that was given to us, which no live-action production can match. I mean, look at the details, the character development, and the unity. We have a wide range and diverse authors yet the harmony and continuity is so perfect.

So a huge thank you to all of the writers and the brain behind tracking the continuity. Canon or not, who cares at this point? Trek is not about touching real world issues but also giving us hope and entertainment. A future to look forward to. This is what Relaunch is all about. It's what hooked me. What made me chose the Relaunch reality as my "personal canon" -- and that's coming from an gamer who enjoyed the STO branch as well.

Relaunch is _the_ new canon.

A huge thanks to all of you.

I know I've said this more than once on the forums, but if I had to choose between keeping the Litverse and new Trek on TV, it would be no question that I'd keep the Litverse; I wouldn't have to think about it for an instant. The work of all of you all is amazing. I love seeing where you've taken things, and I can't wait to see where they go.

Oh also, to head off Christopher:

Relaunch is _the_ new canon.

They probably mean figuratively.

(Just teasing :p)

I love the relaunch era. I've been a lifelong Trekkie, but to be completely honest,I don't know how into Trek I would be today if it weren't for the relaunch. The relaunch brought about a whole new passion for Trek for me.

I honestly didn't think I would like the re-launch books. I read the TNG and DS9 books and liked them but stopped reading them when the respective series ended and at that time had no interest in continuing the sagas. I don't have a problem with closure and moving on.

Then I decided to re-watch Voyager and read Homecoming and the Farther Shore just to 'see' what happened. I discovered a 'whole new world' of Trek Lit and to my surprise I found out that I liked it.

At the moment I'm going back and catching up on the Voyager stories that took place during the series but this time I'm not going to stop. I'm going to keep on going. I am seriously considering going back and doing the same for the other series.

So yes it is a great idea. Sorry it took me so long to come around.

Even though I'm still on the DS9 relaunch and still feel like I'm living in 2003 when it comes to the Trek lit universe, I feel like the books are where I go to get that New Trek. I like the Abrams films, Star Trek moreso than Into Darkness, but we've only had two and it's just a new kind of Trek feel. The books takes me back to the era I was a fan of and, while I'm still reading Unity, I've really enjoying what they do bring to the DS9 mythos. I'm thinking about transitioning from DS9 to another series (I've heard the Enterprise Destiny Books are really good, but I also want to do some TNG or maybe finally read Homecoming and Further Shore) after I finish as kind of a break point. There's just so much to read it might start feeling a little overwhelming.

The sheer mass of it is daunting, which is why it took me so long to move beyond the DS9 ones. But as the thread indicates, it's well worth it IMHO... :D
