Just ST:TMP on Blu-ray, complete with its shitty over-DNRed, puke-green tinged transfer which is why I prefer to watch the fuzzy, muddy, worn iTunes version on my Apple TV. Fuck you so very much, Paramount/CBS/Whoever.

SLR

Just TMP and TWoK for me on DVD. The other four films have elements I like, but as a whole I just can't accept them.

The TNG films leave me stone cold. Better work had been done in the series within the first four seasons. The less I say about ST09 the better.

Just the 2-disc DVD editions of TMP, TWOK and XI. I was too slow to get the others in time before they were discontinued. :P

I've got the silver 2-disc collector's editions of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", "Star Trek: The Voyage Home", and "Star Trek: First Contact" (a.k.a the three best Star Trek movies :p). I see no reason to upgrade for a few more featurettes and commentaries, Blu ray image quality, and a shittier cover than the originals, which capture the terrific theatrical posters.

Blu ray picture quality may be better, but the quality of the early 2000s collector's editions was still a huge improvement over the original transfers, especially the 80s ones. It's so nice to watch an 80s movie that looks like it has circa 2000s cinematography and you don't need Blu ray for that.

Have digital copies of TVH and TUC, and all 4 TNG films and STXI on blu-ray. Those are the only two TOS movies that I actually like, and while I do think they're good, I don't particularly feel a need to upgrade. The TNG set and XI were musts though.

I got the DVD full movie collection (TMP through Nemesis) in... '06 or '07 I believe. I've also got a copy of Trek '09 at my aunt's house that's TECHNICALLY hers, but she doesn't use the DVD Player all that much anyway.

I'm going to hold out against Blu Ray as long as I can justify it on the grounds that I feel it was redesigning the proverbial wheel for the sake of redesigning it - my DVDs look perfectly fine on the TVs I'm using, including the 52 inch plasma screen my aunt got not that long ago. I don't need to be able to see the space acne on blurry background alien #47 to enjoy my movie.

My general feeling as well. Granted the costs have come way down for the players and the discs themselves, but I'm not feeling pressed to make the jump yet.

The special 2 disk DVD editions of Star Trek: The Motion Picture through Star Trek: Insurrection.

Star Trek: Nemesis on DVD.

Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection and Star Trek (2009) on Blu-Ray.

I also double-dipped on the Star Trek: The Original Series having all three of the DVD and Blu-Ray season sets.

^^ I like your sig. :techman:

Which is in no way an indictment of the film itself, which I feel has enjoyable elements (which is why I own it on Blu-Ray). Just reflects how impossible it is to discuss its flaws with its fans.

I used to be such a Trek completist. I'd buy anything with the Trek name on. Which is why I've gone through Pan and Scan and Widescreen videotapes of all the Trek movies as and when they were released up to Insurrection. (Although I only had the TNG movies in widescreen).

Then along came DVD, and it was time to upgrade. In the UK, the films were released in reverse order, Insurrection, First Contact and Generations were OK, released anamorphically with fair soundtracks, on barebones discs, but limited edition foil packaging with a number stamped on each one for exclusivity.

Then came the Original series movies, where it began to fall apart. Undicovered Country and Final Frontier were non-anamorphic, but to make up for that, they started bundling in extra discs to add value. The first one was a sound effects CD. Pretty wank. Thereafter they started bundling in CD-ROM games like New Worlds and Starfleet Command.

Backwards we went, and Voyage Home, TSFS and TWOK were at least anamorphic, if still barebones. Then came TMP! And they went all special edition for it. I was excited. Fuck was I excited. Loads of extras, commentary, and a 'completed' version of the film.

Until I watched it, and then not so much. It was Ok, but I still preferred the original 'incomplete' theatrical version. But with the release of TMP SE came the announcement that the other movies would get Special Editions as well, just as I had finished buying the barebones discs at full prices. I was swearing at Paramount for a good week after that, and I also swore that no more would I spend money on Star Trek merchandising. That turned out to be a lie a couple of years ago, as I found the 2-disc TWOK (my fave ST movie) for £3 in a bargain bin. Bought it, watched it, saw Nick Meyer screw with the movie in a director's cut, then state in the commentary for the movie that he hates director's cuts. Realised I hated the director's cut, decided to stick with the barebones disc thereafter.

I'll never buy Nemesis. I may buy ST09 if it too falls to around £3, as it was an enjoyable summer action flick, but nothing much else to me. But I'll never buy the other movies again, on Blu-ray or on the inevitable 3D formats.

But I did get a VHS DVD combi last year, and I learnt that Paramount never copy-protected their retail VHSs. So I now have the theatrical version of TMP on DVD at last! :)

My personal collection is not particularly indicative of my tastes. I'm a cheap bastard and hate to pay more than $5 for a DVD. I generally buy off of evilBay or at a used video place in town.

I bought STXI, aka: "The Abomination" partly as an act of contrition for my persistent Canonista tendencies and partly so I can shout obscenities at it in the privacy of my own home. I'm trying to build up a tolerance/resistance to it--so I don't lose any more friends over this whole monstrosity reboot thingie.

TFF, what can I say? I sort of love this goofy trainwreck of a film. And, triple-breasted cat-woman! what more reason does a guy need?

I'm a bit confused over the recent re-re-releases - the standard editions in separate packages that I believe are one disc. I'm assuming all the extras from the previous releases' secondary discs have been omitted, and are even out of print? If so that's a shame because a lot of that content was actually very well done and informative. But most perplexing are the new extras. Are there new commentaries and documentaries on each disc? For example, did Meyer record a whole new commentary for TWOK and TUC? Are the original commentaries (text and audio) still there or completely replaced? I've tried reading reviews on amazon and elsewhere but it's never clear. I have gathered that they are all the theatrical cuts only.

The only thing more infuriating than the inevitable double (or triple) dip is the ones where they don't bother carrying over everything from the previous version.

The new commentaries replace the old commentaries on the recent DVDs. These new ones are "pro fan" commentaries this time. Significant names from the world of Star Trek are paired (or tripled) up to comment upon one of the ST films, but more as fan commentators. For example, the writers from JJ Abrams' "Star Trek" movie do the commentary on ST IV.

To squeeze all the old and new material onto the DVD format would mean the old double-disks would suddenly become triple-disk sets, so they were pared down to just the theatrical cut of each film (first time ever for TMP and ST VI) plus an all-new commentary to give buyers a cheap, fresh option. And to give shops something that looked fresh, new and interesting now that their dusty old stock had sold at clearance prices.

However, the old and new commentaries are intact for the simultaneously released Blu-Ray editions of the movies. Blu-Rays can hold more data.

The only thing more infuriating than the inevitable double (or triple) dip is the ones where they don't bother carrying over everything from the previous version.

Imagine the outcry if these new releases were only available as three-disk DVD sets!

See, I'm not understanding this. People want the DVD version as soon as possible after the film leaves cinemas. So the company releases a bare-bones DVD. But people want commentaries and making-ofs and director's cuts, so inevitably this will come out as well, as a nicely packaged double disk. But the best commentaries are often the ones where the contributors reflect back over the passing of time, so new commentaries on old films are also good. But people also want as cheap-as-possible, and for all versions to be kept in print forever. And for any new release to include all previous material? For people who've already bought the bare bones and double-disk versions, why should they have to buy everything all over again?

And, as I said, shops demand that they be able to stock products that look new and modern, so DVDs are rebirthed over and over, in new covers and with different supporting material. Commercially speaking, you cannot expect shops to keep everything in stock forever, waiting for you to finally succumb to buying a version of a DVD. (After they've consigned it to a bargain bin?)
