That second one for TVH actually was used long before the home video release. It started appearing in newspaper ads after the movie was in release for a couple of weeks. I guess the marketing guys decided that the faces on the original Bob Peak poster art were too dour and didn't convey the sense of fun of the movie that appealed the most to the mainstream audience. I like the original one much better as well.

I really love the teaser TMP poster. My second favourite is the film release poster for TMP. Over the years I've been pretty disappointed with the posters for Trek. I think they largely stink, actually.

Because the actors are more recognizable and larger in the image - therefore it's better for a smaller format and possible impulse sale.
