Trek guest actors in maybe surprising roles

Harry Townes, known to TOIS fans as Reger in "Return of the Archons" as the D.A in the pilot episode of The Defenders TV series,1961.

That series keeps reappearing in this thread. Was it any good?

As per my post including Ian Wolfe you replied to, but apparently missed:

...This show was the basis of what became the series The Defenders on CBS starting in 1961, a series which really indicates how far some shows could push on network television even pre-Star Trek. You think them toying with Caroline Palamas being pregnant at the end of "Who Mourns for Adonais?" was daring? Heck, The Defenders did a whole episode about abortion and out of wedlock pregnancy (and didn't dance around the language) several years before Trek hit the air. It's a fabulous example of forgotten 60s TV and how good it could be and the first season of it is out on DVD, and includes the Studio One "The Defender" above, so if you're a fan of 60s TV and want to see a first rate drama (13 Emmy wins), grab it.

Well, I did miss that. Thanks for repeating it for my benefit. Now, I have to see that show!

I will be more specific: Buy The Defenders Season One DVD set. I still hold out hope that it will hit some sales number and someone will decide it's worth it to release the next season of this great series.

saw William Schallert, of course, in a 1960 episode of One Step Beyond, "Tidal Wave." A small part, but, I mean, he just looked the same for 50 years.

I hope so! For one thing, there are four more Shatner guest appearances on the series that have yet to be released on DVD (one in season two, two in season three, and one more in season four).

I am guessing the series is about lawyers and their clients.

Like a lot of shows, The Defenders takes a while to find its footing, and my understanding is the 1st season is arguably the weakest, but if this is "weak" it's still better than the majority of TV of the time. Go buy the DVDs so they'll release the next season!

When was the first season released?

It came out in 2016 and, I was told, didn't make sales targets so there were no plans to release other seasons. But, Police Story Season 1 came out on DVD in 2011, and S2 didn't follow till 2017, so I'll still hold out for the possibility.

So, it's very likely that they'll do so for the other seasons as well. Just give it time.

There are no imminent plans for seasons 2-4 -- Shout only licensed the first season.

If you want the remaining three seasons to have a chance on home video, buy the first season, and tell your friends about it!

I think I've got one not previously mentioned: The Twilight Zone episode that's on right now (meTV) is "The Passersby," a Serling script from the third season, starring Joanne Linville and James Gregory. It's set immediately after the end of the Civil War, if you haven't seen it. (With music by Fred Steiner, very effective and subtle, especially at the end.)

Now The Defenders was never really my thing, in spite of Hulk being in it.

MeTV is showing a Season 1 Bonanza right now guesting Susan Oliver alongside Jack Lord and Edward Platt.
