TREK college course?

I remember reading a few years back about a college course being based around Star Trek and the various messages and themes of the various incarnations of the shows. Did this ever come to be? It there is such a class, I wish they offered it on line!

Over the years there have been numerous college courses based upon Star Trek specifically and TV shows in general. I know that the college my dad teaches at once offered a Star Trek-themed seminar.

My college did have a 300 level english course in Science Fiction. They read, among other works, Dune, A Canticle for Leibowitz, and some Asimov books. They also had weekly screenings of some seminal Scifi works, including TOS, which was then discussed following the showing by the class and the professor. I did not take the class as I had read the books already, but I did go the the TOS screenings!

Also, there are several academic books on Star Trek that have been published to date. There was a thread on this a year or so ago here.

I've never been able to sit through the movie version of Dune. But Asimov... Foundation is the greatest sci fi work in all of literature as far as I'm concerned.

I would love to get college credit for watching sci-fi. Never going to happen here though.

My institute (JFK-I for North American Studies in Berlin) had a whole seminar devoted solely to Star Trek. Sadly, a year before I got there. It was for the cultural studies department and from looking over the syllabus, it tackled anything from gender over race to cultural impact. Clearly, I was born a year too late.

However, one good thing that came with the seminar was that the library stocked up on Trek books. Yay!
