TREK BBS - Best of TV 2008.

We disagree on many, many things... but if you haven't seen The Wire yet, you need to, immediately. Certainly there's a vibrant debate and discussion over that series waiting to be had on these boards. It's better than Dexter.

I have all the seasos of The Wire but won't begin watching it till I have finished catching up with CSI (S5 at moment). From what I've heard I will love it but I doubt it will beat Dexter, which I consdier the best cable show ever (edging out The Sopranos).

^^
I hope you start a thread when you get down to watching the series. As for Dexter, I love it, but certain leaps in logic that occasionally crop up in order to further the character in that series make me prefer the Wire. Not by a wide margin, but by a margin, certainly.

I made a deal with one of my friends that I would watch The Wire if he agreed to watch Chuck.

I just borrowed the first season of The Wire and intend to start sometime in the next week.

My top shows are (in no particular order);
1) NCIS
2) The Unit
3) Big Bang Therory
4) How I Met Your Mother
5) Two And Half Men
6) Burn Notice

Let me know what you think of The Wire once you've finished a season or so.

Skins could never, ever work as a US version - the whole thing is set around drugs, sex, swearing...
So, I take it you've never seen Oz? :rommie:

We have enough sanitized TV here already.

The antidote: all six seasons of Oz on DVD. After that, start in on Deadwood if you haven't had enough.

Just get the first four seasons of Oz. They tell a complete story. The final two were just rinse, repeat. The first four were as unsanitary as you get.

I'm not sure I've ever even heard of Oz. I'll go and have a look...

It's a fun test to see what the limits of your tolerance are. It's not the best series ever made; it's more of an exercise in seeing just how much mind-bendingly awful shit one writing team can dream up. Some of it I swear veers into the realm of science fiction. The biggest weakness is when it just goes way, way, way over the top.

Applying the Oz approach to an American high school is an interesting idea. Even at my most cynical, I'm not sure any of them are quite that bad. :rommie:

Deadwood
otoh is genuinely good, and not quite as ridiculously horrific at the expense of everything else. Just has a slight fetish for obscenity, that's all.

^ I'll have to look at Deadwood as well - friend of mine has been bigging that up for months. And it's not like I have anything new to watch until late Jan/early Feb either. Excellent.

Christ, I don't nearly watch as much TV as some others around here do. The few shows I do watch, while I do still enjoy them, I feel they have not been as strong as they were in previous seasons (probably due to the strike).

In no particular order:

Everybody Hates Chris
I love this show. It's hilarious. Season 3 felt a little "off" for some reason, and I do not know why. Season 4 feels a little "off" as well. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I watched seasons 1-3 on DVD and am watching Season 4 "live". Before I could zip through a number of episodes and see the progression more easily as opposed to once a week.

The Office
I hated the return batch of episodes after the strike. They were very, very weak. Season 5 seems to be a bit more of a return to form, but the show is not nearly as strong as it was, I think (especially with the prolonged Dwight-Angela-Andy triangle and the PB&J story arc).

Heroes
I was a fan of season 2. I know, there are only two of us. Anyway, this season started out strong with some interesting directions, but it simply didn't grip me the way seasons 1 and 2 did (I even watched them all in a row like I did with seasons 1 and 2 - Thanks DVR!).

Smallville
The ending of season 7 was convoluted at best. It seemed like the writers just needed stuff to throw in there to make it seem like the entire series was somehow connected. When I heard of the changes coming for this season, I feared the worst. Surprisingly, this season has been fantastic. Easily one of, if not the, best season of Smallville. I like how they are making it more of a Superman show than before.

House
Just got into it. I'm digging it, although I'm not a devoted fan.

Stargate Atlantis
Too bad it is canceled. I really think it found it's footing and had a good balance of personalities in the cast of characters. Minus the Keller-overload, of course. I think the quality is on par with what came before [insert a "it was always crappy joke" by a dick poster here], but I think with the line up, it had great potential. Here's hoping the last two episodes are good ones to go out on.

South Park
Like many other shows, it hasn't been that strong this season. But this show has it's strong seasons and weak seasons. I suspect it'll upturn.

Terminator
I started on it. Season 1 was great. Season 2 blows. I gave up on it a few months back. Maybe I'll go back if I hear it improves, but I'm not holding my breath.

It is RARE for me to find a modern comedy that I don't find low, crass, and just plain offensive. I realize there are a lot of people who find that brand of humor acceptable, but I do not. Even the genuinely clever stuff is so peppered with overt sexual, scatalogical, and downright nasty material that I find it impossible to tolerate. Funny does not have to equal insulting your audience.

Yet, you have an Office avatar... :p

^ Trust me, Jim and Pam are all that keep me watching The Office. I'm about fed up with it, too. ;)

^ Oh, I'm not fed up with it yet. I just think the arc of her at school was dragging and needlessly long. I'm guessing Jenna Fisher was doing a movie shoot, because it really seemed like she completely disappeared from the show.

nuBSG: It's the only show I never miss. And I can't wait to see how it all wraps up.

I haven't caught the Wire yet. But based on what I've heard about it I'll be sure to check it out at some point. However, I'm not too fond of the setting. I'm suspecting it's not quite my type of show.

As for Dexter, I sampled a few episodes. And while I did enjoy some of the scenes I came off with a pretty bad feeling about it. I don't mind anti-heroes in the least. But the main character strikes me as one of those types of characters who doesn't belong at the center of a TV show. I don't think psychopaths like this should be showcased in a medium with such broad appeal and reach. I feel the same way about characters such as Hannibal Lecter, by the way.

^ It cheers my very being to see someone else on here who likes Skins :D

Loved it. Don't know if this is a good or a bad thing but it captured my teenage years perfectly. I hope the US doesn't try and redo it for American like I've heard. We have enough sanitized TV here already. Also hope that season 3 is as good if not better.

Skins could never, ever work as a US version - the whole thing is set around drugs, sex, swearing... I'm impressed it actually got shown. I mean, this is a show that had students doing a musical based on 9/11!

Series 3 starts on Channel 4 over here in late January and is going to revolve around Effy and her friends. That in itself is enough to get me to tune in, cos Effy is awesome.

Unless it was on HBO or Showtime, I'm pretty sure US network TV won't show something this true or caustic. Last time I've seen something this true to life (for some of us anyway) about growing up was the film "Kids".

I have to admit the 9/11 episode was a little hard to watch, but the storyline and watching Chris's reaction to the musical kept me watching.

I just hope they don't screw it up with season three.

I know I don't watch 20 shows! Anyway:

1. Lost
2. True Blood
3. House
4. Fringe
5. Californication
6. Pushing Daisies
7. Heroes
8. Sarah Connor Chronicles

That's about all I watch!
