Trek 2017: Starfleet Academy?

Bruchpilot

Cadet
Newbie
Can't find it now, but I read a rumour that the new show might be centred around a group of cadets in Starfleet Academy. The more I think about it, the more I'm warming to the idea. It'd be a great way to introduce new viewers to this universe, as for once we'd not be following the exploits of super-competent officers with years of experience under their belts, but watch as a bunch of greenhorns take their first steps into the big unknown. Given the serial nature of contemporary television, it'd be absolutely amazing if after a few seasons we'd see them graduate and actually get assigned to a starship. The potential for character growth and gradual opening up of the vast Trek universe could be immense.

The only downside is that I read this Academy concept is to be centred around the TOS characters, which I hope does not turn out to be true. I'm really not interested in yet another version of Kirk, Spock and Bones. If they're going for the Academy angle, I hope it'll be set way after the TNG era.

It sounds very depressing :(

http://worldofoddballs.com/rumors-cbs-star-trek-is-based-on-star-trek-academy-years-fan-cast-1/

There are strong rumors that the upcoming CBS Star Trek series will be based on the canned script “Star Trek: The Academy Years” which was written by Harvey Bennett and David Loughery for Star Trek TOS’s 25th Anniversary back in 1991! There is a great probability that production houses are actually considering Academy Years as the next expedition of the Star Trek franchise.

Nooo, please no.

Why the Academy? Why not kindergarden? I'm sure the TOS crew as already together in the kindergarden where they solved crimes and other mysteries. Some kind of scifi-Columbo-muppet babies.

Ah come on now. Why so cynical? :bolian:

I agree that rejuvenating the original crew yet again would be incredibly tiresome, that's why I'm hoping for it to be set during an entirely new era of the Federation. In that context, I think an academy-based arc would do wonders to attract new viewers and allow for some really interesting gradual character growth.

It's called Star TREK. Are cadets allowed to do much space exploration? Seems a bit limiting. Even DS9 had the runabouts and the Defiant to trek to other places when needed. I don't want to watch a series about young cadets to be honest. Even if they had their own ship I'd be bored. A mix of age groups would be nice.

I don't think I'd like an Academy series either.

A new era with links to the others would be good though.

Well technically the valiant went for a "trek across the stars".

My wish list: completely new crew, with a strong lead actor (More Stewart less Shatner). Doesn't matter what universe it's set in.

Cameos always appreciated, be they Quinto, Frakes or Wheaton, but in limited numbers. A big one (ideally from Prime) for the pilot, along the lines of Admiral Mccoy in TNG, Picard in DS9 and Quark in Voyager, but then nothing for a couple of years while we learn the new crew.

While the races we know and love will exist, they should be used sparingly. And no borg. At all. Ever.

Basically recapture the magic of TNG. A new trek for a new generation.

I'm down for all that but I don't mind a Shatner or Stewart type. Either is fine by me. I'd also like it set in the same universe as all the other shows but everything else you've written is exactly what I want to see:techman:

Just don't turn it into a CW show. Pleeze. A little romance around the edges is ok but keep it in the background. Way in the background. This is a female fan talking btw. You don't need to pander to us with all that because we don't want it. That's not why we watch.

The students can go on training missions and 'stuff' will happen.

If IIRC they are not limited to staying at Starfleet Academy in SF. Paris spent a semester in Marseilles while he was a cadet. There could be training bases all over so they could shake up the location and have adventures and explore 'new' things.

It could work. Depends on how they handle it.

Worldofoddballs is a fucking clickbait site. There's never anything of substance there and no reason to believe that they do anything other than make articles up out of whole cloth.

An Academy series would be too much of a niche thing for the new series. It would be like setting it aboard a Klingon ship, you'd appeal only to fans, and a small percentage of fandom at that. It's not the kind of thing the first Trek series in over a decade or a show that's launching a new streaming service can afford to be.

This is all true. The ghost of Harve Bennett pitched his script to Alex Kurtzman, who said, and I quote, "you got moxy."

Coming to CBS All Access:

I think an Academy show makes a lot of sense for CBS. Cast mostly young, good looking people. Keep the budget lower because there will be fewer space scenes and if it's successful you can build up to the cast being assigned to ships in later seasons.

That might even be an interesting route to take if you have a show where the main cast gets spread out on to different ships. Shows like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead have shown that people will watch shows where the main characters each have their own storylines to follow that don't necessarily always converge.

Shows like GoT and Walking Dead are the models Kurtzman should be looking at, yes.

The books they released to tie in to ST 2009 were set then. Pretty good stuff. You're definitely right, a lot of potential. And it would be fresh. Hopefully the "who's dating who" side wouldn't get too out of control, but that would definitely be a new spin. Interesting idea
