Tread for the airing of grievances with the modding of this forum.

I would like to offer a public apology to anyone who has taken issue with anything I've said/done in the forum in the last week. Some know more than others, but suffice to say it's been a hellish week that's included such joys as having to postpone my own wedding due to a rather serious family emergency. I've been trying my best to keep as level-headed as possible when approaching the forum, not going the easy route and handing it off to someone else to deal with. I agreed to do this job, and I treat it as such. I don't want my issues with RL to cause any of the other mods here extra work, but if any of that stress has come out in how I've approached something in the forum this week, I wanted to formally and publicly apologize to all involved. I will continue to try my best to be as level-headed as possible while the situation continues. That said, please, if anyone has any problems with something I've said/done, please remember this thread is here for just such a dialogue, as is my PM box if you'd prefer it be private.

I appreciate all of you. I want you to know that. Thank you for making this forum someplace where people can go if they need help or have questions or just want to learn something new. Your expertise makes this place what it is.

I posted this in another thread, but I think it merits reposting here. Folks, I'm being honest, this is the way I'd love to see this place run.

People actually being willing to admit there are people in this forum more intelligent or more experienced with a field than they are, and attempting to participate in an intellectual discussion instead of mocking other posters for their efforts to actually educate someone on a topic instead of just appealing to the lowest common denominator. I've received more than a few PMs from people I'd consider our "brain trust" posters that are concerning me and I apologize profusely to them for not addressing the issue sooner. RL got in the way in a manner that I never could have anticipated.

This isn't a forum where you're naturally going to be spoken down to. I hate that when it's done to me, and I don't want anyone here feeling as though they're being spoken down to, either. If you want something in layman's terms, all you have to do is ask for it. Otherwise, how are the people you're asking questions of going to know your level of expertise? This isn't remedial chemistry/physics/electrical engineering/etc., nor should it be treated as such on a blanket level.

Yes, there are going to be people in here who talk on a level that's over other posters' heads. We've got a lot of highly-skilled people who post here. I'm grateful to all of them for taking their time to help others understand the world around us. I'd highly suggest folks learn to accept that and move on, instead of referring to these folks as "showoffs." They're not showing off, they're just talking on a level that might require some folks to work to understand them. Goddess forfend that anyone posting on a science fiction BBS might want to understand the science behind that fiction at some point.

This is a science and technology forum, folks. It's my fondest hope that we can learn from each other, not just sit here and do the old "*chuckle* *point* Geek" at people who are honestly trying to help others understand the high-concept stuff in this universe. Are there discussions that I don't get? Oh, yeah. But I have my areas of expertise, as does every other person posting here. If you don't get something, and you want to understand it, ask. This isn't high school. You're not going to get made fun of for not knowing something. I promise all of you that I'll make sure of that.

If you don't understand a point someone's trying to make, by all means, ask. Never be afraid to ask questions. There are no such things as stupid questions as long as I'm running this forum. By asking questions, we learn. And if you haven't come in here to learn, please, ask yourself what have you come in here for?

Terri, you're making this feel so formal. You'd make a good lawyer :) I do understand the need for some order here. My personal feelings about bbs moderation is that its mostly to stop bullying and nonsense posters, and to move misplaced posts to their proper homes. Bullies and nonsense posters should be dealt with privately, via:

(1) Limited tolerance; (2) Friendly message; (3) Warning; (4) Heavy warning; (5) Account suspension; (6) Account removal.

We value your good work. :)

Thanks, Jadzia. If it's worth anything, I was a paralegal for a while. I only didn't go to law school because I saw how the firm I worked at ate their young. ;)

I'm sorry, I'm trying not to make it formal, and that's how I usually approach things whenever possible. I just thought that something on that level of clarification made sense to post outside the original thread that generated it. We do have some highly-intelligent and experienced people here who are actively trying to help others, and I've been made aware that some of them feel their efforts are going to waste. And I really hate the thought of losing such valuable resources.

Well I'm mad as Hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

Let's all scream it out the windows, kind of a communal group thing, and see if we don't all feel better. ;)

just recently joined. Considering the simple fact that i haven't noticed any troll activity to speak of, either you are doing a rocking job or trekies aren't prone to trolling. I'm highly sensitive to trolling as i have a very high IQ and trolling makes threads and forums STUPID.

Making a thread to discuss your modding is like- wow-

Should you desire to get a look at a bunch of stupid moron mods who don't do their jobs and where thus there is trolling, entropy, and sheer moronic stupidity, i could link you to all sorts of forums i happen to know of-

:bolian:

Welcome aboard, prometheuspan. You might want to take a look at the introduction thread to see what other types of posters you will be dealing with around the forum here. We have a good population of science enthusiasts as well as scientists here. All are welcome. :)

I try to foster the "teach as well as learn" mentality in this forum as much as I can. Yeah, we have some egos here, but as long as we can remember that we have things to learn from the others as well as things we can teach them, we usually have a good time. :)

thanks TerriO. I seem to be getting an organic feel for the place.

i should probably try not to talk politics or religion tho. Can't seem to help it.
:klingon:

Well, there are always going to be subjects that have a political component, the funding of the space program, the candidates' stances on science funding during an election season, etc. As long as we can remember to keep it civil and address others as we'd like to be addressed, we usually don't run into too much TNZ territory.

Historical or archaeological aspects of history are far from off-limits. There are plenty of peer-reviewed journals on biblical archaeology and related subjects. It's when we get into crossing the line between belief and hard evidence that things begin to break down, at least from what I've seen.

I'll be more than happy to tell you when you're getting into TNZ territory. Trust me on that. ;)

The Neutral Zone. It's our opt-in forum for more heated discussion topics like politics and religion. Things tend to be a bit more dog-eat-dog there.

you know, people keep talking about that, and i keep thinking it must be
"miscellaneous."

now you finally tell me one has to "opt in."?

how does that work?

Maybe i really just really maybe i should just NOT go there.

sigh.

I finally find a board thats nearly troll less and It turns out i've picked up bad habits.

THANKS!!

for better or worse i have joined. Now i just need to go meditate for a month to get back my old

considering all of the bad bad :klingon:

habits i have accumulated from hanging out in trollhattens.

I have a complaint. You closed my dermal regenerator thread for no good reason.
Erh ...

Odo's_Bucket, if you'd like to try the thread again, you're welcome to. I encourage it, actually.

Starting two threads that are the same is 'against the rules' isn't it?
Sounds like the mod suggested I 'break the rules' so that he can give me an infraction.

Yeah, sure, whatever. If you want to believe that.
