Transwarp Drive really a failure?

Go ahead and call me crazy, but I still like the idea that Starfleet was trying to build a jump drive during the Great Experiment. They discovered the new Warp Ten was the top of the threshold, the fabled "Infinite Velocity," and thought if they could reach it they could hop from point to point.

Not so much, but in my mind it did then lead to the modern TNG-era warp drive.
