Trailer for "Firefly" fan film

I was never a fan of the series myself, I don't know what about it turned me off, but I could never get through the first 15 minutes of either the movie or any of the shows I sat down to watch. The original pilot however I did like for some odd reason ( I think it was the bad guy being sucked into the engine). But I'm sure there are people out there who feel the same about Trek. But a big Huzzah! to you guys for towing the line and turning out a product that is obviously near and dear to your hearts. Good luck. What are you guys shooting it with camera wise, and what editing system are you using? Which 3D software are you using for the effects?

The 3D rendered CG effects are done using Maxon Cinema 4D XL 9.6, along with Photoshop, and some of the compositing is done using After Effects. We've got some other progams that are used for smaller effects.

When we started out, we were using a Canon GL-2 DV camera. I'm not sure what we're using now, but it's comparable, if not better.

As for the editing, I have no idea (they don't tell such things to the Captain), but our editor is a VFX coordinator for one of those movie companies that make movies about talking animals :) So he's got access to professional editing equipment.

It looks good, something I would definitely be interested. As a firefly fan, I appreciate the effort to make this work. It reminds me of the original Star Trek in that like Gene, I think Joss has made something that has a lot of power to inspire, and I think we're only seeing the beginning of that.

As for the video itself, it piques my interest, although I wish the sound mixing could have been a little better. Everything kept fading in and out for me.

Very interesting though, will watch for the future.

It sounds like the sound is being recorded with the on-camera mic.

Production values leave something to be desired, but I look forward to the final product. I can't fault you for not being professionals after all. Someday I hope to get my own fanfilm production off the ground, I'd love to play in the Firefly sandbox with ya.

Oh, and for anyone who hasn't seen it, theres another intriguing development going down in Oz. Bellflower

I'll keep my eye out for this one. I loved Firefly and Serenity so this looks good.

As for fan films, I've seen some really bad ones and I've seen some really good ones and this one looks good.

Considering that this is a first trailer for a first episode, I think what you've got is pretty impressive.

Just a little update on our progress. We're about 90% finished with principal photography, and the one thing that was holding up completion is no longer the big issue that it was.

We had needed to build our cockpit set in order to film the remaining scenes. Unfortunately, the big pieces that we needed in order to build we at one location, and the build was taking place somewhere else, and we didn't have a truck.

Fortunately, I was able to get one of the transport guys from a TV series I used to work on to come by with a cube van, and we got everything moved over in one quick trip - Huzzah!

Our main set builder guy appears to have the coming week off, and is planning to go crazy with the building, so we should make some very significant progress on the cockpit this week, and hopefully be in there filming by the beginning of June.

The end is so close, I can just taste it :D

I was actually getting ready to do a Canadian joke but now I can't.. thanks eh...

Re: Trailer for "Firefly" fan film - update July 19th

About a month ago, myself and two other members of ITB (Miranda Coombe, who plays Sera York, and Eric Tong, writer/producer) did an inteview for The Signal podcast, which has now gone online.

The Signal website can be found here: http://signal.serenityfirefly.com/ and we're in #13.

Come and give it a listen (part 1 starts about the 11:30 mark, and part 2 around the 40 min mark)
