It looks absolutely stunning, but it's still not very clear what the show's running plot will be. I was under the impression it was going to be very seasonal. So hopefully one more trailer with a bit more plot before the show airs.

Orville looks nice and all, but none of the jokes are really funny and it doesn't look like it will try to tell a story about something.
I saw a comment on Reddit the other day where someone who wasn't being sarcastic or joking was saying that the new Star Trek series looks like it's taking an interesting approach by being more comedic and having Seth McFarlane play the lead. I imagine that there is going to be some brand confusion.

I have a feeling most of the content of the trailer is from the pilot. I think it'll be refreshing going into a pilot without really knowing much about it - I remember pretty much knowing the exact plot of Caretaker before I saw it for example.

General impression of some comments:

1. Lot's of people don't know the purpose of trailers
2. Lots of people were so excited about the trailer but didn't listen to a word from the panel
3. Some are still saying it's "not star trek" which is not a criticism in any sense.

My impression:

1. The "philosophical" narration: Lot's of soul searching and personal connection to the characters going on, especially Burnham. Gives it a nice sense of urgency.

Looks like this will definitely in the background of "war" but the SDCC panel put it into context. It won't glorify it.

2. When lines are longer like this it's easier to get a slightly better taste for the acting than the short clips from the first trailer. Thankfully it seems excellent. I need to see whole scenes first though to get a better idea.

3. This is a shot like a movie. I can't wait to get my 4k bluray discs after the season is over. :)

4. The world building will be major here. There's so much rich detail, background explanations. This show will do for TV what the Kelvin films did for Star Trek: make a more fully realized universe.

5. The SFX. Staggering. Some of the clips were too quick, but my impression is they didn't go far into the shaky cam of NuBSG. Some is fine, but I want to see the ships!

6. Design: Overall, I like it. I knew the Klingon ships would look better on screen than in the artwork. Several shots already look iconic. I like the D7, and panoply of existing ships, but it really was refreshing not to see the same designs again. It's nice to look at the detail and not know what it is yet. Before I could just stare at something and subconsciously identify it..the sameness breeds eventual indifference. I'm going to have to work a little harder at viewing.

7. The song works. Trek is forcefully being brought into a 2017 presentation (kicking and screaming by a segment of "fans").

8. Mudd is almost exactly as I'd pictured him, somewhat jocular but more sinister. Rainn might get an Emmy nod. This is in his wheelhouse and in the panel, he seemed very enthusiastic.

9. In fact, this show seems poised to get a host of Emmy's. Certainly, the budget helps, but that budget is on screen.

10. There are several iconic lines already: Sarek's perception line, and Lorca's: "We are creating a new way to fly", and the question at the end of the trailer. Simply terrific.

--------------------------------------

I look at this and think "wow"

Remember when TNG used to be criticized for the ships squaring off on the same "plane" . Awesome in it's time..

Great cast:

Agreed, I even had the script and followed along with it. :)

They're holding back some major details, mainly because these result in twists during the episodes.

I think the Scenes are almost all from the Pilot and the Episode right after that, where the survivors of the Shenzhou find themselves on a derelict spooky Starfleet Ship which is stuck in some kind of time-phenomena. Or maybe that's the Discovery and Lorca is mostly alone like some Captain Nemo?

They have given us another prequel and another version of "Klingons trying to reunite the houses". At this point I don't expect them to cover much new ground.

It's amazing how people think of trailers as the end-all, be-all. Two minutes out of a two-hour premiere, and nobody really knows anything concrete past that.

Very happy they haven't done away with that beloved Trek staple: clunky dialogue. "Sometimes...down is up." *Operatic ladies cooing in the background for added drama*

13/10, was moved to tears.

Now as long as consoles still explode and ships still face off like re-enacting the showdown at the OK Corale, I'm so in.

All in all a great trailer! I am a bit disappointed that they seemingly are using pulse phasers. With some exceptions like the Defiant, the beam weapons have been a trademark of Star Trek. These pulses seem more like generic Sci fi.
Wrath of Khan and the Kelvin movies use red pulse-phasers.

And in their very first appearance ("Balance of Terror"), the TOS Enterprise's phasers fired pulses which detonated, the FX and concept later became photon torpedoes.

Not gonna lie, I thought the weapon FX were a little weak. Everything felt meatier in the recent movies.

Because there are so many plot twists in the 15 episode "novel", they are trying to keep many plot elements secret.

Not a bad point actually!

I believe there was at least one console fatality already in the trailer. So no worries. :bolian:

I fail to see where people are getting the idea of a time dilation.
Yeah, I don't see anything like that in the trailer either. Seems pretty straightforward to me: As a child Michael loses her parents in an accident at a Vulcan school, is rescued by Sarek who takes her under his wings. As an adult Michael is serving on the Shenzhou under Georgiou. They have an encounter with the Klingons, where the Europa and the Shenzhou are destroyed. She and Saru survive and get transferred to Discovery where Lorca needs Burnham's help to stop a war. I don't see any time travel element in this story.
