Tradition be Dammed...

Captain
Captain
I am of the opionion that in Voy Ep "One Small Step" that the crew of Voyager should have kept the Body of Lt John
Kelly in stasis until their return to earth. On Earth he could have been given a true heros welcome where his desendents could have intered him in a proper way.

Now he is just roaming through the DQ?? Good call by Seven to attach her com badge to his body, bad call by
Janeway to dispatch his body to interstellar space.
Any comments...

They always dispatch bodies into space. It's a tradition hearkening back to being buried at sea if you were a sailor. Even Spock didn't get taken home to Vulcan to be buried which would have been completely easy.

I find it a bit unnerving too, but that's the way it's done.

Since he was an historical figure it probably would've been a good idea to keep him, but what about the bodies of all the lost Voyager crew members? It would've been disrespectful to have kept Kelley but then dispose of those others. There probably wouldn't have been enough room to put them all in stasis anyway.

What does a hero's welcome matter to a corpse?

And honestly, if my great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather was lost on a mission in a profession he loved, and then found by folks in the same profession, more or less, and disposed of, I'm pretty sure I'd be okay with it.

But then, I'm not one of those Ancestry.com commercial folks who think its important to know that whether or not someone I didn't even know were livin' next door to famous people at some point in their lives that ended before I was born.

So do you boycott Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Presidents Day, Columbus Day & Labor Day? You know the days considered national holidays that commorate dead heroes that fought, died and built this country that we now take for granted as simply a day off from work.

Of course not, but I don't go around lookin' for the corpses of the folks who died since 1776 to defend the country. Nor would I want one of those corpses delivered to my front door.

They had the logs from the shuttle, and treated the corpse as they would have one of their own.

That's good enough for me.

My in-universe guess is that it would be a drain on VOY to keep him permanently in stasis until they got back.

Out-of-universe answer is that they wanted to show this man being honored for his accomplishments, and opted for a Star Trekkian space funeral. I think it would have been nice to see his body safely home, IMO, but, at the same time, I do get very teary at the funeral.

So I'm kinda torn on this one. I love this episode in general because, while I realize it's rather Ameri-centric to focus on NASA, I love love love the line about the early astronauts being the "true pioneers." And I am so glad Star Trek decided to dedicate a whole episode to honoring them, which is ballsy considering that a lot of people out there wonder "why should we care about space?"

It takes real stones to go to space, and it takes brilliant minds to expand our understanding of our universe. These guys really are heroes.

I'm not sure about the power drain of one stasis chamber, on the overall power distribution on an Intrepid Class S.S.
However I'm sure it's not all that much, IMHO it would be worth it...

...but you aren't a professional explorer or archeologist either. the folks on Voyager are. Too people like that, a corpse has value.

Apparently not, since they shot it out a torpedo tube.

Ok.
UNCLE.
There, you win.

I don't know, I think for people like Malcolm Reed, at least, that's the sincerest form of flattery.

Honoring the dead while exercising his torpedo muscle. That's having his cake and eating it, too.

At this point were they looking at another 30 YEARS with that guy in their morgue?

Would have been nice to bring him home but imagine, in battle or something, they loose power to the stasis chambers... :wtf:

Also who is to say that the Astonaught wouldn't have been satisfied blowing out of Voyagers Torpedo Bay... I would have. ;)

I'm sure they took DNA samples to verify his identity to his descendants and history back on earth, in case their own records weren't enough.

In "One" Seven managed to keep the entire crew in Stasis for the duration of the crisis. I am under the assumption that one stasis chamber would not present a signifacant
power drain to Voy, and if power was a key issue, why keep several alcoves active, when only one was needed...

Think of all the other resources that could be shut down with the whole crew in stasis, though. No holodecks, no kitchen, no lights in most areas...all Seven seemed to need was periodic visits to sickbay, astrometrics & her alcove.

And they weren't travelin' at warp speed, either.

It could have been done, that is my opinion. This situation has been a mystry since he vanished, having his body intact prove that there is more out in interstellar space that we imagined...
