T'Pol's Eyebrows

Alienesse

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I was watching Enteprise last night and I remembered something odd that I noticed the first time I saw the show, but didn't have anyone to talk to about at the time.

Does anyone know why T'Pol's eyebrows are shaped like a human's? I don't remember ever having seen a Vulcan with downward-pointing eyebrows. My guess is it was a make-up decision. Maybe they thought regular Vulcan eyebrows wouldn't look good on Jolene Blalock? I know they changed the appearance of the Trill species from TNG to DS9 because they didn't want to put a bumpy forehead on Terry Farrel.

Here is our lovely T'Pol in Season One - Acquisition

And here in Season Three - E squared

She is perfect with any shape eyebrow :adore:

Kirstie Alley's Saavik.

Right! I forgot about her. :alienblush:

I'd say she's actually prettier with raised Vulcan eyebrows. It's probably one of those small inconsistencies that happen in TV production and that us viewers have to learn to ignore.

This.

And unless tweezers are going to be banned at some point within the next hundred years, Vulcan woman, just like human ones, can shape their eyebrows any way they please.

Well, aren't Vulcan eyebrows supposed to be naturally slanted upwards? The way ours are naturally pointing downwards? I don't suppose Vulcan males are shaping their eyebrows with tweezers, are they? At least I hope they aren't.

I've already responded to the eyebrow issue here.

For reasons never explained -- AFAIK -- they just left her eyebrows human (her ears were also a departure from other Vulcans).

Since I loved the way Kirstie Alley looked in STII, I didn't quibble about T'Pol's eyebrows. They're kind of upswept. But I was really happy with her makeover in Season 3-- eyebrows, hair, clothes.

Untill this thread came up I thought I just didn't like the First Saavik for the personality but I realised that it's her entire look...like some human...the way she talked and now that I know she didn't have the full vulcan make up it's worse...

Thanks, MerryJinXmas!

Glad to have been of (dis)service, Saquist.:rommie:

For those who might not know, Saavik was written as half-Romulan in Wrath of Khan, but the lines mentioning it were cut. Replacement Robin Curtis played the part fully-Vulcan (and fully uninteresting, imo)

Similarly, a season five episode of Enterprise was to have T'Pol meet her long-lost father and discover him to be a Romulan spy...

^has that been addressed in the books yet? I lost track after a few but hoped they would. all the books seem to be on some sort of delayed thing. grrrrr.

fwiw I thoght Jolene was wonderful for the part but do think the upturned eyebrows are a better look.

I never finished Beneath the Raptor's Wing, so I can't say for sure, but the novels seem to be doing their own thing, totally seperate from the season five episodes that were planned.

Since Romulans and Vulcans are biologically virtually identical, and we've seen plenty of Romulans by the time ENT came around (hell, we'd seen plenty by the time of TWOK, for that matter), it only makes it a bigger screwup that they didn't get the eyebrows right for either Saavik or T'Pol.

What I don't get is the need to add brow ridges to the Romulans in TNG. Made 'em look like Vulcan Frankenstein monsters.

As for T'Pol's changing brows, the only thing I can think of is that the first couple seasons were a fashion choice, to assist in blending in with humans (like her late night clandestine visits to that jazz club), while her change to traditional Vulcan eyebrows was part of her attempt to better connect with her Vulcan heritage, and help her better deal with the crap that she'd been forced to deal with.

The hair is another topic altogether...
