Townsend and Child Porn?

Okay..what is this story about Pete Townsend, the guitarist for THE WHO, and child porn? The United States government may make him register as a child predator, if he wants to perform at the SUPERBOWL HALFTIME SHOW, due to his collection of Child porn? WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ALL ABOUT? I've never heard of this...whats the scoop?

Re: Townsend != Child Porn

Link

No evidence was found on his computer, AFAIK. There was only a credit card access to a website. That was it. There was never any proof that he did anything wrong. He never had any child porn, on or off of his computer.

The investigation was over the line, and he was never charged with anything. He was pressured (by the media) into confessing to something he never did. As far as anyone knows, and as far as it's any of our damn business, he is completely innocent.

It's utter garbage related to Townshend being charged, but later acquitted, of possessing child pornography a few years ago when in fact, he searched for it as part of his work to fight against it.

All it has proven is that in Britain you are not guilty until proven innocent if you are A) male and B) accused of a sex-related offence.

Thanks for the link. I had never even heard of this until today and from reading that link it seems totally absurd. I think the British Government should go on record and support this guy because, over hear, in USA, that kind of story can get legs.

And as America's attention becomes tuned in on the Superbowl, TV's biggest event each year, this story might grow ...

I guess Michael Jackson should have become a British citizen. It could have saved his career.

I think you misread my post (which, I admit was badly phrased).

In Britain, you may as well be already tried and convicted if accused of a sex-related offence, especially if you're male.

Who DARE speak ill of The Pete?

Well..not ill, just didn't know. There is a story on the newswires about the American government might require him (townsend) to register as a sex offender when he comes here for his SUPERBOWL HALFTIME show...I didn't have any idea what the story was about and asked...now I know and think it is utter bunk.

I guess I did, my bad.

No different in America, I guess.

I'm not sure on how it all works, but I doubt American courts can make Townshend register as a sex offender if he's never been convicted as one. So, all going well, The Who are playing at the Super Bowl half-time? That I may have to watch.

Not if they deny his passport.

I saw the WHO here in san diego years ago...mid 80s. Admittedly I am not a fan of "rock and roll" music. But they put on a heck of a show and I was really impressed with what I saw and heard....

Townshend accepted a police caution for accessing a website during research for a book he was writing that grew out of an anti-child pornography article he had written on his website some years prior, and had to register as a sex offender for five years.

Why would he have to register if he was innocent?

Because he accepted that he did visit the site and did not contest the caution. Unfortunately, the system makes no distinction between searching for such material for research purposes (i.e. just to show how easily available the material is) and actually making use of such material.

I see, I guess they figured you wouldn't be going on such a site if you weren't looking for that type of material.

^Well sure, but if you were an investigative journalist and you attempted to buy a gun illegally in order to write about how easy it is for your newspaper, should you be treated in the same way as someone looking to buy an untraceable gun in order to kill someone ?

Just for being a journalist -- YES.

Just for being a journalist -- YES.

Why ? One is an attempt to raise awareness of a problem, the other is an intentional attempt to commit a crime.
