Touch: New Fox Series

Just curious if anyone watched this tonight. I thought it was pretty good and might watch the premiere when it comes in March. My fear though is it was done by the same guy who did Heroes and look how that turned out. However, it is nice to see Keifer Sutherland back on TV even though every scene he was in I kept thinking Jack Bauer returned.

Just wanted to know what everyone else thought.

Conceptually interesting, well-produced and acted, largely well directed, it will all depend on the writing for this challenging concept. I'll give a 'we'll see'. At least Alcatraz has the cute blond.

Ya, when Keifer was saying dammit I thought he was Jack Bauer again lol

Will Danny Glover have subtitles, because he's gotten hard to understand over the last few years? :p

I await some fan edit credits with Stan Bush's "You got the Touch".

I really liked it. In fact, I liked it so much, it pushed me to accept that I really don't like either Alcatraz or Grimm and will be giving up on both effective immediately. I wanted to like both of those shows, they just haven't lived up to the potential of their premise. Whereas Touch totally hooked me from the first minute. So I'm in for this one and out for the other two.

I really enjoyed it. I thought that it was one of the best pilots in recent years. I know a family that has an autistic son and the show was very accurate in portraying how difficult it is to raise them and communicate with them. I suppose that the show is semi-autobiographical because Tim Kring as an autistic son.

ratings news:

http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/01/26/touch-ratings/

Fox’s series premiere of Kiefer Sutherland’s Touch had a promising preview Wednesday night, but the second week of American Idol slipped.

Touch opened to 11.9 million viewers and a 3.9 rating in the adult demo, while its lead-in, Idol, had 19.5 million viewers and a 6.4 rating — down 14 percent from last week’s two-hour season premiere (though only down about 7 percent from last week’s 8 p.m. hour).

Touch marks the highest retention (on a percentage basis) of a drama debuting after Idol, and is the second-biggest premiere for a new drama this season. Also keep in mind Glee once delivered a somewhat unspectacular rating in its post-Idol preview, then eventually became a hit for the network. Touch doesn’t officially premiere until March.

I hope they're paying Keifer a lot because he was the only worthwhile element in the show so far. Making him a beleaguered, downtrodden everyman is a great idea, but that's the only good thing I can say about this show.

They're really overdoing the mawkish angle. Someone should tell Tim Kring that any writer can string together a sequence of improbable occurrences and then tell the audience there's some cosmic significance to it all. It takes more than that to make a story interesting or convincing.

The non-Keifer storylines were all a complete bore. Thankfully, it looks like those characters won't be recurring. Instead, we'll get new interchangeable international bores on a weekly basis, goodie.

I'll check it out in March because of Sutherland, but this seems like the sort of show where the first episode gives you a very clear picture of what it's going to be like for the duration, so I doubt I'll last long.

Fox seems to specialize in disappointing sci fi shows this year - Terra Nova was a total flop, Alcatraz is meh, and now this.

Speaking of Kring, There are many elements that make it feel feel like Heroes like the kids thought provoking voice overs and in Heroes Molinder's thought provoking voice overs, the way scenes are shot, etc..

Sorry, I'm still burned from what Heroes turned into from such a great beginning to even bother.

I feel Keifer was REALLY trying hard to separate himself from the Jack Bauer image he had for 9 or 10 years

Specifically when the Fireman punched him in the gut and being afraid of climbing the tower.

At least we got one "dammit" out of it

One of the names the Japanese girls mentioned was named "Ando" too

So, the pilot didn't make it clear. Did fireman/smokemonster guy give Keifer's character a large sum of cash or not?

Yeah, I might check this out later if I hear it didn't go totally off the rails under Kring's guidance.

Well, if they've got any sense they'll let him get the first season done, bask in all the critical praise they will no doubt receive, then fire him before he gets the chance to fuck it all up.

I enjoyed it though.

Did Kring stay with Heroes the entire 4 seasons? I remember there was a change in Creative personnel starting with Season 2, either Kring Left, or an important Writer left, or something? S1 was great, S2 and S3 were pretty painful, and I think S4, actually started to improve, and was possibly on it's way to recovery, but, of course, the avalanche had already started.

Kring stayed the whole time, it was Brian Fuller (Dead Like Me's creator) that left to do Pushing Daisies. He might have come back for the fourth season but I'm not sure.

There was something about Heroes that really grabbed me from the start - not so here. This just makes me even more convinced that Heroes was doomed when Bryan Fuller left, because Kring was never the person who made it so good. This is like Heroes S1, with all the good stuff deleted and a low-key iteration of Jack Bauer added.

I think they also fired Jeph Loeb because he disagreed with the creative (mis)direction of the show.

Did he leave after S1 too? If so, that might explain why Bryan Fuller's return later on didn't right the ship, maybe winched it up a few degrees...

And unlike Heroes, I really don't see how Touch's premise can keep going indefinitely. Is every week going to be another collection of improbable coincidences with a heartwarming ending? That's going to get tired very quickly.

Writer claims "Touch" was stolen, wants show halted

Fox is being sued by a writer who claims his novel and screenplay about an autistic child became the basis for the TV series Touch. The show stars and is executive produced by Keifer Sutherland, who is also named as a defendant.

He's seeking an injunction and statutory damages for Fox' broadcast of Touch, which previewed in January to sold ratings and is scheduled to
premiere next week.

Fox declined comment on the lawsuit.

I finally got around to watching the pilot and I was underwhelmed--very lukewarm. The idea of an interconnective strand linking individuals to others was an intriguing idea when LOST played around with it but since then BSG, Heroes etc have repeatedly done it and it seems old hat by now.

I also don't like that it looks to be an episodic series where every week people are brought together thanks to the kid--that gets old every week--I was already bored with it 30 minutes into the pilot.

I had heard so much good early press for it I gave it a chance since this tv season has been lacklustre-I've sampled just about every new show there has been and gave up on all(Terra Nova, The Secret Circle, Touch, Grimm, OUAT, Playboy Club, Revenge, The Firm, Awake etc) but one. Now I can add Touch to the list. I don't think it was that good. I don't see myself staying with it.
