Total Noob Questions: Need To Get A Website Up And Running...

Ablative_Oberth

Lieutenant Commander
Yes, I could pay someone to do it. Yes I could look it up... or I could ask actual people for help. :)

Here is what I want to do: I have a forum for a specific segment of the manufacturing industry on a "advertisement powered forum" site, it's time for me to make a real website that I can eventually put a real forum on.

What I want to do is register "blahblahblah.com" where "blah" is a placeholder... then I need somewhere to host this site, at the very minimum I need to put up a "Under Construction" page.

Where do I begin? And most importantly, I'm looking for informed opinions on the various services... such as "stay away from "Blarg International" or whatever.

Thanks for your help!

I've used justhost.com and been pleased with it. I was able to put together a decent webpage without using many ad ons which I found confusing. The format for making the website is actually similar to using ms word or something. This is my site
http://arch-angels.ca/ cost's about $80 a year to host.

btw, what message board format are you using?

I use 000webhost.com and have been fine with it. Perks include the fact that it's free, there's no adds, storage is pretty decent. Although for a business site/ business forum it might not be enough, just depends on your needs. For the free service the website would end up being blahblahblah.somethingelse.com for example mine is guardian-force.comli.com

It does have a paid service as well, 5 dollars a months for unlimited bandwith, unlimited space, and you can do pretty much whatever you want with it as long as you aren't pirating movies. And your site can be blahblahblah.com

I use lunarpages.com -- I've had very good experiences with them over the past 6+ years. I run Wordpress for my main site and phpBB for my forums (both of which are very user-friendly to install and run -- and free!). You can see the results here:

Your sites are very clean and sharp...good job! :bolian:

[edit] Oops! Forgot...I used LunarPages.com in the past and agree they are very good. :)

That's funny, I stumbled upon that site just the other day. Samuel Walters, you're a good writer and I often agree with you, but when I don't, man, I really don't. :P

Thanks for the compliment, Jeff! And, please, feel free to disagree ... vehemently! It'd be a boring world if we all agreed. Besides, it's all in good fun. ;)
