TOS Version Of Steamrunner Class?

Are you looking for something that looks visually similar to the Steamrunner in a TOS aesthetic, or for something that would have a similar role in the TOS era (frigate/destroyer etc.)? The FASA RPG has a few designs that are similar in that respect but nothing that looks almost exactly like the Steamrunner design.

Visually similar & same role if possible. I am thinking it may have to be created but I am not skilled in CGI. Thank you Unicron for taking the time to help me out. :)

ETA: I am looking for something I can look at and be inspired by.

I tend to think of it as being a heavy destroyer, as that designation is used in Tigger's Ships of the Starfleet. The Steamrunner was intended to be the modern descendant of older destroyers like FASA's Baker and Jackill's Hellion. FASA's Larson and Thufir spring to mind as the closest TOS-era designs I can think of which look kind of like a Steamrunner and have a similar role, and FASA also had the unique Andor missile cruisers.

Hope this helps. ;)

Here ye go - the Taiho-class escort cruiser by Dirk Jansen:

...and for a refit flavor, if you're so inclined, the Veracruz by "Trebuche":

I've never seen those designs before and I'm afraid my first thoughts are "Oberth Class, you had it easy!"

What's the deal with trying to make the secondary hull less accessible? It is something I never understood.

The Taiho probably works better, as the shuttle bay is in the primary hull and it could be argued that the secondary hull is strictly reserved for sensor equipment, supplies and other space where habitation isn't needed.

The Veracruz does seriously pose the accessibility problem you mentioned, yes, with a small Connie-style shuttle area. Inter-ship beaming is really the only way to go there. In the event of a power outage you're pretty much hosed. :)

The basic ethos of Trek shipbuilding seems to be separation of modules with spindly pylons, fins and necks. Access might not be high priority - ability to jettison might be paramount there.

And it's not that difficult to have a barely man-sized corridor running along the machinery, or better still, have a turboshaft run there for rapid access. The latter can be even smaller than the former, as a man would have to run upright, necessitating a corridor about 1x2 meters across, while a lift could move head-on, requiring only 1x1 m or so. (With artificial gravity providing an arbitrary direction of down, one could also have "vertical" slides or chutes dropping in both directions, requiring 1x2 meters in combination but allowing for a more rapid movement than "horizontal" corridors.)

As for the original Steamrunner, she seems to be all shuttlebay in the primary hull, with gigantic stern doors. A shuttlecarrier of some sort? Or a planetary assault "floating dock" vessel? In contrast, we see no torpedo tubes anywhere. Might be that the more "special" a vessel, the less need there is to have the engineers in interaction with the rest of the ship. Let the secondary hull folks keep the ship going, while the primary hull folks get things done!

I always liked a more tighter design and smaller crew, but it isn't an exploration vessel more for escort & heavy arms.

It's *pre-TOS* - but the "Intrepid type" from "Enterprise" has always reminded me a lot of the Steamrunner:

(Huh, given that AND the NX-01 "Akiraprise" - I wonder if 24th century starship designers were mining the 22nd century designs for inspiration!!! That - or Barkley or somebody forgot and left behind a PADD back in Zefram Cochrane's compound...so HE mined the 24th century designs!!! Or maybe it a temporal loop/predestination paradox!)

Huh... Never occurred to me, but yeah, it definitely seems to have similar lines to the Steamrunner.

The Intrepid has one additional "attachment point" - the secondary hull attaches to the primary one. OTOH, she also has just two additional "attachment points" relative to all the classic Enterprises - the nacelle front ends attach to the saucer.

It doesn't seem as if there could be much more variety there in designing saucer-plus-cigars ships. You can vary the shape of the saucer, but the Steamrunner has more of a spade against the Intrepid's nice semicircle...
