To me it is very obvious that the people making this version chose to ignore or were ignorant about a number of details of Trek Canon and then tried to write an explanation for why things could be "different".
The people they were writing it for are totally ignorant of canon: the general public. And ST canon only ever mattered for the authors and editors preparing material to be included in licensed tie-in merchandise, such as original novels and comics.![]()

I disagree. Every fictional/fantasy universe has certain internal rules that need to be followed in order for the universe to be believable. Now, if the movie were a complete reboot (like the Mission Impossible movies or Battlestar Galactica, for example) then you can play with those rules. But the movie goes to great lengths to say that this is not the case--yet suddenly, the transporters work ultra fast and over incredibly vast distances, everyone wears an Enterprise emblem, Spock never served on the Enterprise twelve years earlier, and a variety of other things that are pretty well established within the Trek universe.
