TOS soundtrack music

If you are obsessed with the minutiae of Trek music over all the series in movies (as I am), then I highly recommend seeking out a copy of "The Music of Star Trek." This is one of the most comprehensive publications dedicated to the topic. Interviews, music sheets, TOS music score lists, track lists for select TOS episodes, and a complete list of commercially available scores as of 1999. The author, Jeff Bond, currently contributes some articles to the Trekmovie site.

I'm glad to see I'm not alone in appreciating the music soundtracks of the original Star Trek series. :) Some of it is a bit dated, but most of it is really quite good. In fact, I have listened to a recent composition by an American composer and I swear that some of it influenced him (at least for a passage or two). ;)

And a big THANK YOU to the folks on this thread for listing out more information. I realized that I didn't have the "Best of Star Trek" volume 2. Thankfully many copies are still around, a number on that auction site. I'm already hunting it down, as there are some TOS suites on it that are not in my collection. :techman:

Are there any particular passages that folks here would say are their favorites? I can't remember all of them off hand, but at least one is the Vian's Farewell-Empath Finale. On a quality sound system it sends chills up my spine... truly amazing work. It was reused in Requiem for Methuselah (Kirk is dozing off on his desk, trying to put Reyna out of his mind... Spock walks over, places his hand on Kirk's head for a mind meld and says "Forget...") and All Our Yesterdays (McCoy isn't content to stay in that frozen wasteland, "I know I'm gonna try, Spock. Because my life is back there, and I want that life").

"Ruk Unleashed" from "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" is still one of my favorite pieces. It got re-used in several episodes, all to great effect. All I need is to make it a ringtone on my cellphone, and my life would be complete ;)

On my old Motorola E816 cellphone, I hacked it and replaced the power-up sound with the TOS communicator call beep followed by the chirp. I could time it so that I'd flip open the lid when the sound effect kicked in--real Trek nerd. :D Unfortunately, my latest cellphone doesn't have any hacking possible... :( But I did load some TOS sounds to connect with events, like voice message (boat swain), text message (scanner), alarm (bridge control medley) etc. ;)

More likely, that composer and the TOS composers were both influenced by the same earlier composer.

Had this beauty for years. Sadly, Mr. Bond will not be updating it since the financial returns would not make it worthwhile (he has said as much). It's a shame, there was a lot of good music after the book was written that I would love his insights on. But there you are.

He posts over at Trekmovie.com.

I am sure you could get his insights there...:techman:

I know damn well it will never EVER happen, but I'd love it if CBS would clear the way for a new performance/recording of the original scores (they still have all the original orchestration notes in the archives) as was done with the theme for the Remastered project.

I just got my copy of "The Best of Star Trek" soundtrack... and it is SUPERB! I highly recommend it. Thanks again to
