TOS: Season One

So I rented TOS: Season One at my local library this week and watched a few episodes, which were pretty good. I only managed to watch three, (two jobs are a time killer!), which were "Where No Man Has Gone Before", "What Little Girls Are Made Of" and "The Man Trap".

I've seen The Man Trap before, it's an okay episode, the alien kind of freaks you out when it changes into its original form, but nonetheless it had a good story line. It's been a while since I've seen TOS, and I forgot that there were actually Androids in them just like TNG. Seeing the Android Kirk was kind of funny, but he seemed passable. Would like to see more.

Why is everyone so impressed with Soong androids? Why didn't the Federation study the android tech to learn how to make use of it e.g. remote controlled android bodies sent into hazardous environments?

TNG kinda pressed the reset button on certain things, androids and genetic engineering are a couple of them.

Actually I was impressed with the Androids that I saw on TOS. I haven't seen this show in awhile so I didn't think there were androids in TOS.

Androids are also featured in season two's "I, Mudd".

That's the only episode with androids that I remember them in. I didn't remember any others until I watched What Are Little Girls Made Of.

Return To Tomorrow (S2) and Requiem for Methuselah (S3) also feature androids. Shore Leave (S1) has mechanical beings, not sure if they qualify as androids.

I got the impression from "Ensigns of Command" that androids were a little more common in TNG's era than just Data. Sadly, outside of that episode, there is no indication of any other android besides Data, Lore and B4.

Oh, and Data's mom.

What Are little Girls Made Of featured androids. And featured the ability to transfer human consciousness into an android body.

But in Measure Of A Man Data's very existence as either a sentient being or a toaster that was the property of star Fleet was explored.

Commander Bruce Maddox wanted to take Data apart just so he could figure out how he works and mass produce him. When he was convinced Data was a fully sentient being, then he stopped pursuing that idea.

That take on androids was cringe inducing.

Cringe inducing or not, they are a piece of Star Trek's history and universe.

It's funny too because when Star Trek:Into Darkness came out and they featured that Android, I thought they were bringing 24th century technology back again, but after watching TOS again I realize that's not really the case.

I'd like to order one each "Corinne from my sophomore Science class" and a "Gail from my senior art class" androids, please. Oh, and a "Karen from the security department at work" one too.

With my luck, I would name three women like you did - and they would all know each other. Then I'd be busted. :scream:

"All Our Yesterdays" may count, too, although it's unclear if Mr. Atoz's doubles are androids, clones, or holograms.

(The latter, of course, would be a retcon since holographic beings didn't become a fixture of Trek until the later series, decades down the road.)

Wouldn't matter, 'cause it would be all three at the same time anyway. :)
