TOS Revisited (for the umpteenth time)

I've always figured Kirk watching the beamout sans visor was a mistake. But thinking about it now, there may just have been a point to it - The morality question posed in the title has been answered, after all. If Kirk has rejected the idea that Kolos is too ugly to behold, that there is beauty in his mere existance, that the IDIC concept is a beautiful philosophy, then he wouldn't need the visor. Such a thing would be a very 60s thing.

Besides, he was staring at the hot babe, and wouldn't have noticed a flicker of Medusan at her feet.

Ha! You are so right of course. Thanks for clearing up something that has bugged me practically my whole life. All personnel knew Kirk's eyes would not be dropping below thigh level; thus no visor would be needed. I'm so glad I joined this group where I can learn from the experts.

I figured that, by this point, they'd figured out that the visor was pointless so long as Kollos stayed in his box, even during transport, and Spock was just bookending the experience by wearing the visor, just as he did at the beginning. So Kirk could stand there, watch all he wanted, and sell tickets to passersby in the corridor for all the difference it made.

I'm not really sure why but I really like this one although the idea of changing through drinking a cup of coffee is a bit strange to say the least. Surely they could have thought of something just a little more hitec.

It's the classic Victorian horror story gimmick - drink a potion and become something else.

And not only that; it's so crowded but they still have room to construct a complete replica of a massive starship, and leave it completely empty except for two people. There's a great use of space.

The Way to Eden

I approached this episode with some trepidation but in all honesty it was not as bad as I had remembered. The story was not half bad and there was some reasonable acting. The songs however as always left me squirming with embarrassment. If they could have managed the story without the songs it would have been so much better.

The Cloud Minders

I know that there is a separate thread on this one.As I have stated elsewhere I think, it was a wasted opportunity. It had a serious story to tell and the idea of a cloud city was intriguing. However it was dealt with so clumsily and some of the acting was appalling, particularly Droxine and her father. And what was Spock doing explaining all about Pon Far (is that how you spell it?) to a complete stranger when normally Vulcans would rather die than even refer to it, to anyone??

Phew, just one more to go I think.

Definitely getting TOS fatigue. This one leaves me a bit cold (pun unintended) I like Mr Atoz but the plot seems very thin. If you had the choice of any period in history you would hardly be likely to choose one where witches were still imprisoned and burned at the stake. Also if Zarabeth had been sent to the frozen waste as a punishment, would there not be others there as well. In addition if this was a place of punishment it is likely that Mr Atoz would have known of it and not had to search.

Also, a sort of fur bikini is an unlikely choice of dress for such conditions even inside.

Honestly:

1) Some people WOULD like to live in the past per se. Ren Faires are VERY popular, and some people do romanticize about past eras; so given the opportunity some probably would go back - remember the magistrate Kirk encounter was a man of substance and a bit of power.

2) As for Zarabeth's situation, you're kidding, right? They didn't set up a prison colonly per say; she was sent there for solitary confinement of a sort. Given the length of ice ages, they could send people back 150 years apart; or 100 miles apart in the same era, and they'd never encounter each other.

3) As for the fur bikini - hey, in 1969, Mariette Hartley was hot (pun imtended) - but hey, it's a TV show.

Which brings up the question: If you're all alone in a frozen wasteland, why dress like a jungle girl? Not that I have any complaints about the costume!

Note that the modern guy who chose the witch period was a magistrate, NOT a witch himself. He chose a position where he'd be safe and able to protect himself.

Zarabeth's punishment was very likely a one-off thing. The monarch she displeased wanted to punish her in a singular and special way because she caused him a special personal affront. There's no indication he did it to anyone else.

And the fur bikini - yeah, well, that was just because.

Turnabout Intruder

Well, what can I say about this one? It was definitely a curate's egg of an episode. It kept the interest which is something but the plot was full of holes.

It did not do a lot for the ladies either. The main reason that "Kirk's" disguise was spotted was that he was behaving like an "hysterical woman" which I think was a bit insulting. Surely a woman who had been through the Academy would have had just a little more moral fibre even if she was suffering from some kind of neurosis.

Also as it was the last episode what happened to Uhura? It seems wrong that she was not there. Finally what happened to Nurse Chappell's hair. Throughout the three series she had been a blonde. The shade may have varied but she was still a blonde. Now suddenly at the last minute she turns into a Brunette.

Thinking TOS as a whole with its ups and downs I think that perhaps Roddenberry and the production team were not really taking the whole concept too seriously. Just another TV series. I suspect that it was quite a shock when they found the fans did take it seriously. For the next series they decided to appoint a famous Shakespearian actor for the roll of captain. Definitely up a notch.

Well, I'm off the TNG now. Might just start another thread. I haven't decided yet.

If a Vulcan finds the place agreeably warm, then its definitely "bikini weather".
