TOS Remastered

I remember around the time after ST:TWOK that the filmmakers were complaining about that there were only so many shots of the Enterprise that looked good on the screen. That they didn't like the contour of the ship because it looked "awkward" when filmed from certain angles.

A list of video of comparison classic fx-remastered fx.

So we can have some example
Some of the new f/x are fine, but there some I don't care for at all. I don't like the redone Romulan BoP with the so obvious plating---just looks awful. I also prefer the original hangar deck shots to the new f/x. The new ones just look cartoony. I also don't like how they needlessly changed the design of the ship in "Spock's Brain" rather than just refine the original design. I also don't like the new version of the Tholian ships.

That's just for starters.

Yes, but there is "xwing swoosh" in the new f/x?

I've noticed. It looks ridiculous.

:lol: Did you ever watch the original opening credits of TOS???? NOW THAT is swooping. You guys are hilarious.

RAMA

What, the straight-line hi-speed swish past the camera? I don't think that's what's being talked about. "Swoop" doesn't mean traveling in a straight line.

Obviusly "X-Wing" was an exaggeration. But there are shots of the ship doing quick little dips and wobbles, such as when it comes thru the Gacactic Barrier, that looked ridiculous. And I thought the strafing run down the length of the Planet Killer was pretty silly too.

I haven't watched all the new effects yet - I've watched maybe half the Blu Rays. I've seen some decent CGI, some mediocre CGI, and some bad CGI. One or two shots that made me go "wow!", and a lot that made me think the original were (except for image quality) better, and some shots that made me realize the CGI artists are not very good at composing a shot. The orbital establishing shot with Apollo's hand clutching the E with the planet in the b/g was graphically awful terms of object placement within the image.

I think I understand what's being described because I get the same sense. I think what we're seeing is essentially a different sense of how to depict the ship in motion. And it comes right back to what I've said about this all along. As nice as the new f/x can be many of them don't look like anything that could have been done when TOS was in production even if they'd had the resources and budget of a feature film. Even the resources of a feature film in the 1960s couldn't have depicted the Enterprise moving like TOS-R depicts.

We're talking about a very large and heavy and cumbersome filming miniature and the days before motion cams were developed. The way ships are shown moving in Star Wars a decade later was made possible by new types of cameras being then recently developed. And note that in TMP and TWOK when the motion cams were available they still didn't depict the Enterprise moving as it's shown in TOS-R.

That's why I find many of the f/x in TOS-R jarring because they have a distinctly different aesthetic than what could have been done even under the best of conditions back in '66-69.

I'm not a big fan of remastering anything. Whether it be music or movies. I think that when something is done and been put out to the world, it should be final. Remastered OS episodes look ridiculous. I was happy with the Enterprise on a string.

I also feel many of the new f/x shots look more like they belong in a TNG, DS9, VOY or ENT production rather than TOS.

Seems to me the CGI team took the time to make their ship model do a few things that the old physical model couldn't do, because the heavy model had that huge rod suspending it for the camera, and one side gaping open with wires running everywhere. They could have made only CGI shots that were possible only for a ship with a rod in it, but then people would have castigated them for not trying something different.

As far as I'm concerned, the CGI team doubled the number of TOS episodes I can watch at home whenever I feel like it.

I'm not bothered by any of the remastered effects. I think it looks as good as we could possibly hope for. I'm sure however that as home theater technology advances we'll one day see another iteration that will fix some problems while simultaneously causing others for fans.

Star Trek - 3D? ;)

I have all the RM Start Trek in HD and they are just phenomenal, for me the new effects simply enhance the overall greatness of the old series stories and the acting, and being in HD just puts a final cherry on the top of that big fantastic original series trek cake.

My only gripes about the new visual effects are that the new Romulan Bird of Prey lacks the graceful look of the original ship, and the new Klingon D7's geometry looks not only too different but also faceted like something from a mid 1990s video game.

ALL of this 2D stuf will one day be unwatchable to kids brought up on 3D or on entertainment accessible from mind commands via the Great Link (I'm actually serious).

Just as most black and white films are to my high schoolers. BW is crazily offputting to them. Oh well. I ain't a-showin' no colorized Grapes of Wrath!

and I still say the character of the Ent is changed by a few of the "flying" effects shots; but that's probably not a huge deal since my beloved originals still exist. HEY - I wonder if I can get faded prints like I grew up watching at 6 pm on UHF 50 in the D? Now THAT's what Star Trek is supposed to look like!

I want prints that have the snowy interference from watching it on WKEF(22) from Dayton... in black and white!

I'm guessing the recent CGI editions were just attempt #1, and other attempts will be made every decade or so.

As long as the original team who made the optical effects of TOS are honoured by including their groundbreaking efforts as a viewing option in any future releases, I am fine with it.

I have all the remastered TOS seasons on bluray...the show never looked or sounded better. As far as the Enterprise goes, I'd say 95% of the shots I think look incredible....the other have a strange, almost too clean, look to them. But my gripes have nothing to do with how the old girl moves.

Okay. This is the best mannered "New FX Thread" I've seen since being on the BBS. Where is the yelling and incivility?
