TOS-Remastered: a waste of time

We should insist that players for past formats remain available at a reasonable cost, forever.
Blu-ray players will play DVDs. Sorry if you knew that, but your rant suggested you didn't!

Yes I know. And if they played VHS, Beta and Laserdisc, I wouldn't be ranting.

Well as far as VHS, you're not completely out...

And laserdisc players are still being made..

The last new laserdisc player produced was discontinued almost a year back, in mid January 2009. Pretty sure it was Pioneer, but won't swear to it.

NOBODY makes them anymore, and outside of GoodWill and online sources, it is pretty damned hard to turn them up in most locales (which is why I haven't been able to watch TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING properly in the last few years.)

Re: TOS-Remastered: Fantastic, CGI: a waste of time

Nothing got lost.
The original versions are still available. They are also on the Blu Rays.

Are we sure about that? It's already been reported that a shot of Spock's tricorder from CotEoF has only the enhanced version. Maybe there are other shots where they inadvertantly didn't provide the original footage.

Personally, I didn't notice the above change, but I'm just pointing out that there's the possibility of original footage not being available on the blu-rays.

Damn right!

I wanna be able to play my wax cylinders!

I know of a lovely little shop in San Bernardino that has lots of antique cylinder players. Those with heart conditions should make sure they've taken their medication before visiting.

To be perfectly honest: I can live with that. :)

Or super-8 movies, or 8-track tapes, or slides.

A friend of mine still has a collection of amazing videos taped on a Grundig machine, a step up from reel-to-reel, and a handy sized cartridge - much smaller than a U-matic cassette - but Grundig tech was the first casualty of the Beta vs VHS war. Unwatchable from the moment her Grundig machine broke down.

I refused to buy a wax cylinder player because it wouldn't play my sheet music and piano player rolls. I won't fall for Edison's scam to force me to buy that music all over again.

Seriously though, I do sympathize with Forbin.

I'm probably one of the few who wish they had gone even further with the remastering. I have all three seasons of TOS on DVD, both the original and remastered. I can watch either whenever I choose. I prefer the remastered version to the original simply because the picture quality is lightyears better. I watch them on a 42 inch, Magnavox HD plasma TV with a 500-watt 5.1 channel surround unit. I usually watch the episodes in "cinema" mode so that they fill the screen without being horizontally stretched. It is a truely awesome experience. In some cases, I do wish they had gone farther with the updating of the effects. I would have liked to have seen better transporter effects. In some TOS-R episodes, you can still see the matte lines around the characters during transport. I also wish that some of the screen displays would have been updated. One that comes to mind is the scene in WNMHGB when Spock is reading about Mitchell and Dehner. It would have looked much better if that had been updated to a more modern looking computer screen display instead of old typing paper projections. But that's just my opinion. They could have done so much more. But I think they held back so that the transitions between new/old effects wouldn't be so obvious. But I still love the original too. I can and do live with both.
