TOS-R"Omega.. ' butchered by syndications cuts.

I had just watched 'Omega Glory' on DVD and then I today saw the TOS-R version.

MANY of the 'ship shots' are cut for syndication.

I know they don't make the cuts with the new FX in mind, but in some cases such as this, it really ruins the point of even bothering to watch these on TV.

Here's to the HD-DVD release later this year!

They must have also cut out the scene which shows Kirk and Spock actually taking the keys and escaping from their cell...as I saw it, they just looked over and saw the keys, then it cuts to them already outside the cell.

"Wu" was turned into an Iranian named "Mohammed," and they put a Hitler mustache on the pubis of the redheaded Yang chippie who goes commando.

Having just re-seen it for the first time in years, yeah, even within this episode's own internal consistency (such as it is), there's no "there" there.

The actual implication is that these people had SUCH long lives that the US Constitution existed THERE (as ancient words) some THOUSANDS of years before it was written here.

That in itself is a bit of a bizarre concept (though some sort of race memory COULD be a reason it has found its way to more than one planet in the galaxy).

The regular version of this episode had one of the worst syndication cuts I ever saw. The guy is fighting Kirk in the cell and nearly killing them. They cut away and when they return, Kirk is fine and the guy is on the opposite side of the cell.

This episode is one of the strangest, that to me it is almost very good.
I think the first half is very good, it is just the yangs, cooms and everything around it is crap.

Kirk: "..in time...even looking like the American Indian"

Seriously, it looks like they rounded up some Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello beach extras for the Yangs. Hardly looking like hill-dwelling barbarians.

Kirk "...these words must apply to everyone...even the Khoms!"

Cloud William: "Khoms?! We kill last of them hour ago."

McCoy: "Even that fine young thing who brought me lunch?"

Spock: "That 'young thing', as you call her, was over 300 years old."

McCoy: "Well, she didn't look a day over 200."

Looks like they cut that part where Tracey makes Kirk call the ship for more phasers. However, a few moments later we see Capt. Tracey learn the hard way that phasers do not have a "low power" indicator!

I was watching AMOK TIME (TOSR) again the other night, and it never hit me before that when T'Pau says to Spock "It's said your Vulcan blood is thin..." all she says on the Remastered version is "It's said..." and then they cut the rest.

ANNOYING!!!

I don't know why I didn't pick up on that before.

Did they really need to do that? The way the lines go, what she's saying makes no sense. Makes it all look very strange.

This episode starts out good, with all sorts of excitement and mystery...then it degenerates into embarrasing poop.

This might be one of the earliest examples of Shateracting. He really goes off on the whole "We. The. People." speech.

The one bright spot in this episode is Morgan Woodward's portrayal of Captain Tracy. Just enough over-the-top to make you hate the guy while still feeling a little bit sorry for him.

'The Omega Glory' is one of the show's true lame ducks like 'The Alternative Factor' or 'And The Children Shall Lead'. The less of it, the better.

I actually enjoy the Omega Glory. It's not one of the best episodes, but I think its far better than some of the worst. By the way, what is the running time for the TOS-R synication edits? I'm curious to know just how much they cut out. I'd say they excise at least 10 minutes worth of footage.

No they only cut out about 6 1/2 minutes, but it seems like more.

Omega Glory is a very decent episode until the last 3 minutes when Kirk makes his speech.
If they were to leave most of it intact and cut out the whole speech and 'revelation' part they'd be doing it a favor.

Lastly, what is little known about the episode is that it was written with the intent that the inhabitants were colonists from 21st century Earth who continued the cold war on the new planet and then destroyed it.

After season one and two established the TOS era as only 2 or 3 hundred years into the future--it became impossible to portray the people as decendants of Earth because the plauge had extended their life spans into in some cases, a thousand years old. This would have meant that TOS would have to take place over a thousand years into the future.

So they deleted most references before filming and some in editing to the inhabitants being Earth colonists.
So we end up with another 'parraleel Earth' planet rather than a long-lost colony.

I prefer to think of it as a lost colony where the colony ships went through a space-time anomoly and wound up colonizing the planet thousands of years before they left thus resulting in what was shown

So long as one accepts the premise of parallel worlds, "The Omega Glory" is one of the better episodes of the show, and Kirk's -- an American -- reading of the Declaration of Independence is heartfelt, as good as his "why we explore" speech in the third season. I'm more troubled by the racial dynamics than the notion that in a universe as vast as the one we inhabit, there could never be such a thing as a parallel world.
