TOS-R Blu-ray leak from Norway!!

Hey, DigitalBits, a DVD/Blu-ray news blog, has posted a leak from Norway about Paramount's Norwegian release plans for TOS-R on Blu-ray on 5/13, just after the new Trek movie's US release date (5/8). As stated in the blog, US release plans usually coincide closely with Europe's, so my bet is that the TOS-R BR US release will be on or before the movie's US release, as we all expected. DigitalBits also posted the Norwegian cover art, too, along with news about the Blu-ray releases for 5 of the first 6 Trek motion pictures (sans V, mercifully). Here's the link:

I'm getting excited!!

There's more than a little scuttlebutt that Shatner is pushing to have all the effects for Trek 5 redone , as well as have a 'director's cut' of the film to clean up a lot of the issues of the movie (as well as add a few needed establishing scenes).

That may very well be why 5 is conpicuously absent in the release list, and why the 'full set' of 6 isn't going to be available right away.

Of course, it's also Paramount, so they could just be screwing up things again. :)

Also a shame that they can't do STTMP Director's Edition because the effects were never rendered for any res. higher than DVD. Come on Paramount, let them re-render the effects!

Great news... sure would be awesome to see this for later series as well (pipe dream, i know).

Already have everything on dvd and there's no really compelling reason to upgrade. Better picture quality isn't worth the cost to me. However, I'm excited by the fact that Shatner may get Paramount to turn loose some money for him to upgrade the effects and do a Director's Cut. I'd buy that for sure.

I hate it when people say I already have it on dvd and its good enough so they shouldnt redo the effects. Why cant they redo the effects for people who would like the movie in the highest possible resolution with the best possible effects. Its not like its gonna make these people who enjoy watching the older versions any less happy is it?

Yes. It'll make them cry, for they will know that, deep down, they are not Leet and therefore are inferior. The oceans will rise from the flow of their tears of lament.

The effects are done in 35mm, which is much higher resolution than is possible with any standard HD format. Now if you're talking about tweaking matte lines or something like that, it is a whole different kettle of fish, but when they do this mostly crappy CG, it is a step backward, not forward. (note that I am not jumping the shit of really good CG ships, like SOLARIS or most of SUNSHINE. But most don't hold a candle to good miniature vfx work.)

What is nice about this Blu-ray release is that both versions of the show (original or with cgi effects) will be available for viewing via seamless branching. Since each episode was fully rescanned and cleaned up before the inclusion of the replacement cgi effects, both versions will benefit from the remastering process and will look stunning in HD.

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing the original effects shots presented in high definition, regardless of any inherent grain or matte problems that will be revealed. It will be nice to hear the original theme and Ms. Norman's voice again rather than the satirical re-recording from the remastered versions.

Sure, but just give me back TMP's original Red Alert claxon.

The remasters would benefit from the original audio track there!

I'm psyched the theatrical versions of TMP, TWOK and TUC are being used. Especially the last two, I never liked Meyer's additions and he really f-ed up 6 with his Scooby-Doo mystery subplot and the new B&W clips (with BONGGG) during the mid meld.

The compelling reason for me not to get the BD series is that BD has only 16% of the marketshare compared to DVD at 84% and that's after a year of winning the HD format war.

I have a PS3 and an HD TV (I also have an HD DVD player which is a really fantastic Upconverter) and while I prefer BD to DVD all day long, the problem is that I am compelled to purchase DVD's in my house because I have a two year old that watches movies not only in the family room but in her bedoroom, our bedroom, the spare bedroom and the game room.

This is a big problem in that the players cost $200 still and a decent dvd player costs $30 - $40. I'm not buying 5 BD players at $200 a pop.

Another issue I see is that of the PC BD Burners which at best are $189 but the flippin' media is insanely expensive. I have been able to find them for about $3 (still too much) per disc at Newegg but for most consumers who buy their crap in a store, they will pay $20 - $25 for one blank disc. I bought two 100 pack cakeboxes of Sony Inkjet printable DVD's for $30 (total cost) last week at Costco.

So until they get their act together on the cost of the hardware and the media, no one is going to jump in with both feet.

They're killing themselves with this format and if they don't make changes soon, it's goingto die.

Nope, sorry.

There is absolutely no word and very little likelihood of seamless branching.

It's not stated in ANY report by Bill Hunt or trekmovie.com.

They simply stated two versions will be available---nothing more.

Paramojnt HAS NEVER released a songle DVD or Blu-ray with seamless branching and is not likely to start now....

There are several possibilites of what the two versions mentioned actually mean...........

A Blu-ray version with the new FX and...........

a. a standard definition version with the old FX AND the dirty old prints seen before

b. a standard definition version with the olf FX with the new cleaned up prints or

c. a second high defintion version with the old FX with the new cleaned up prints.

Also no word if the second version will be on a separate disc or combined on the same disc as the hi def version.

None of this has been answered for sure.

Seamless branching of course would ONLY work with option 'C' as both would have to be hi-def to 'share' the branching.
I do very strongly hope for branching, but do not expect it.

we'll see in the next few weeks as the official announcement is made

There will be plenty of good full-featured Blu-ray models well under $200 by spring...

You won't buy Blu-ray till you can afford 5 of them ???

you realize they are also cutting the Operation: retrieve scene and the scene with Spock, Scott & Valeris in the torp Room?

The reveal of Col West doesn't faze me one way or the other, but to lose the other two scenes just to get rid of 14 seconds of the mask stuff is not a good bargin in my view.

I'll be waiting for the second release with all the alternate cuts.

One thing that convinces me branching is out of the question is that the timing of the inserts of the new footage is not perfect. More than a few times, the live action is dissolved sooner than before to give the new effects a couple of extra seconds. So the effects timings are not 100% in synch with the originals. There'll be gaps, jumps and screw ups aplenty. Eh, I prefer them to be separate anyway. To me, "seamless" is rarely that, I am such a nitpicky asshole, I fricking notice every single difference. At least there will be justification for the double sidedness of the discs this time around.

Which is why I would love it more than anything if Paramount would put another audio channel on the older prints which would have the original, pre-enhanced sound mix of the original films. Every single episode was played with and some episodes and scenes are ruined for me because of these issues. Some of their sound effect decisions are also baffling. We have never actually had "the original versions" on DVD.

But, anyway, seamless branching doesn't look to be something they can do in this case, and the picture quality changes would be jarring. I'd rather have lesser quality for the whole length than sporadic spurts of lesser quality. This is why the color/b&w version of The Cage is hard for me to watch.

Apparently you missed the part about already having a PS3. You do realize that the PS3 has built-in BD player, right?

And I can afford to buy 5 of them right now, I'm just not going to. It would be a phenomenal waste of money for a format that has 14% marketshare a year after winning the HD format war.

What I'm saying is that I'm not committing to the format until (and if) they get their act together. Those damned machines should be no more than $100 by now. I own a grand total one BD, The Dark Knight and I really don't intend on buying more until it makes sense for me to replace all of the DVD players in my house. All of my Netflix orders come in BD (if available) but as I said, when I purchase, I have no choice but to purchase DVD if I want to watch them in more than one room in my house. Again this point is further driven home by the fact that I have two-year old who watches her movies wher she wants to depending on her mood.

You know how you can make sure that their market share increases: by buying the damn BDs!

Nope... not going to subsidize the market by myself until they give me a reason too.

When did you start buying DVDs?
When everyone else already got them?
