It was a poignant scene, especially when I first watched it at the theater. But the scene doesn't hold up for me on repeated viewings when the mourning for Nimoy has passed. IMHO.

I know what Spock thought of it...

Purity only matters in cocaine and Ivory Soap.

And if you can grind and shred up the latter the former can become a very funny practical joke.
Or olive oil strangely.

More on topic, I do not understand the pushback against this moment. It was Spock mourning the passing of both a mentor, a fellow Vulcan, as well as himself. Whatever one thinks of the Kelvin films themselves Spock Prime had a huge part of it, and an impact on his alternate self. It's a beautiful moment both inside the world and in a meta way as a long time TOS fan.

"Put aside logic. Do what feels right." You're right, Spock. And so I cry for missing Nimoy.

It looks like Quinto-Spock is mourning the death of Nimoy-Spock. And if you think about it, that makes no sense. They're supposed to be the same individual. .

Not really. Spock-Prime was Spock's older self from an alternate timeline, who he had met in the flesh and had a personal relationship with.

So, yes, in a world where time-travel and alternate realties exist, one could reasonably mourn an alternate version of yourself whom you knew personally and had grown close to.

Just as you would miss anyone who was part of your life and who you would never be able to see or talk to again.

Not that any of us are likely to ever encounter such a situation in real life. :)

Never saw it, so I couldn’t say. I checked out after Into Darkness. I just can’t watch these cultural vandals deface Star Trek any further.

And already encountered with Spock in the TAS episode "Yesteryear".
