TOS Phaser Holster

Klingon Empire

Captain
Captain
To complete my costume, I need to make a TOS Phaser Holster. The Most common one I have seen is the Brown one. This sticks out like a sore thumb, but it also is the easiest to make. What I am intersted in is what they used to keep the phaser on the belt. It looks like Velcro, but I'm not sure. Any insight would help greatly. Thanks.

You should make one of those brown "holsters" seen in The Man Trap. I love that look.

Also, be sure to post some pics. :techman:

Actually, the shade is not of concern, as I do not hold it often. My Phaser is a DST Prop Replica, how whoul I be putting the Velcro on? The main Phaser Body or the Phaser 1 unit?

(DST= Diamond select Toys, for referance)

At Kelso: Which would you be reffering to, I haven't seen the Man Trap yet, so I am unfamiliar with that look.

The side of the phaser 1, as seen here with one of the surviving midgrade phaser props. Note the silver stripe painted on to simulate the P1 midplate.

Okay, thanks so much you guys. This will help me greatly. I have to now get some Velcro and put this together. Thank you, guys!

If you're interested, I put neodym magnets in the handle of my AA phaser. They're small, very strong magnets. I have a piece of foam with adjacent magnets that one can simply put in their side pocket and it secures the phaser effortlessly. In fact if you're not careful it can be much too strong, don't use too many/strong a magnet.

I think it's much cooler than Velcro, and I can stick the phaser in various places for display. (like the refrigerator )

Actually, The Velcro is more accurate to the show and thus my favored opinion, thanks for the suggestion though. I'll seriously consider it.

To be accurate to the screen-used prop, the velcro goes on the side of the Phaser I, but what I've found works better in walking around in costume and occasionally showing it off is putting a patch of velcro just above the handgrip, right about where your thumb goes while weilding it.

Well, CRA isn't saying on the handle; he means on the body above that but below the side stripes. I just did a test by holding a phaser up against my hip, and it looks like the natural curve of the hipbone nestles in there just fine.

I have another question--

The sideplate on the Phaser I unit, would that effect the Velcro at all? Whould I have to sand tdown the sideplate to get it to work?

Not going for CRA's suggestion? Not to be down on your quest for accuracy (as I feel that way myself), but it might be worth considering that the P1-to-P2 attachment on the AA/DST phasers isn't very strong, so I'd think the velcro-on-body method might result in a phaser that's less likely to drop off your belt.

Normally for sandpaper, the best thing to do is start with a rougher grit and work your way finer until the surface is smooth. Since you'd be adhering the velcro over the part you're sanding, though, you can probably skip the finer grits and just glue the strip right over the rough patch. The side rail isn't very substantial, so you could probably go with a 100 or even 150 grit.

Actually, I am sanding it down so that it doesn't push the phaser 2 off.

But I think I did it wrong, as I too have just tested it the same way you did and it seemed to fit right. Thanks!

I always try to avoid inflicting damage on a phaser for the sake of sticking it on one's hip, and a small velcro patch above the pistol grip works very nicely with no sanding required (I woudn't worry about anything pushing that Phaser I out of the mount, it's quite secure, I just tested it). If nothing else, the pistol grip slides quite nicely through a standard belt loop, if you wanna get really lazy.

What generation release is your phaser? Supposedly the earlier versions of the toy had better quality control than more recent ones; I can vouch that on my white-handled edition, the P1 has a nasty habit of coming unseated at random times.
