TOS on DVD

Who in god's name buys any DVD/Blu-rays at Barnes & Noble?

That's like wearing a sign that says 'rape me' !!!

They will be $65 or less at Amazon or Best Buy and less when they occasionally go on sale.

Please don't rip yourself off at B & N

I have to agree. Two months ago I got all three sets of TOS Remastered from Amazon for $140.00.

But I must confess, a few years back I bought TNG season 2 at my local Borders (I had to, it was the ONLY place I could find it.) for $75.00. Borders and Barnes & Noble DVD's are a last resort, and now that I've been doing business with Amazon, I bypass them altogether.

I was only mildly impressed by the greater picture quality of DVD over VHS. However, the first time I saw 2001 on blu-ray, I nearly sh*t myself.

I have a Playstation 3 in which me and my husband bought a year ago. After then since I know the PS3 can play Blu Rays, thats all the dvd's I buy now. I love the blu rays so much better than the regular dvds, because of the picture quality and sound. When TOS Season 1 and The Motion Picture Collection of the orginal Star Trek movies was released on blu ray, I bought them. And I will tel you I absotly love the picture and sound of the dvds on my PS3! And by watching them, it does make it feel like you are part of the movie/show. I plan on buying season 2 of TOS and TNG movie collection and Star Trek XI when they are released on blu ray. I can't wait for those to be released!

Yep, I can't wait for 9/22 when the TNG and season 2 sets come out.

TNG Blu-ray box set for $46.49 at Amazon
Season 2 Blu-ray set $74.99 at Amazon-----I'm not gonna pay more than $65 though because that's what i paid for season 1 at Amazon.

I hadn't heard this. is this per season?

I was buying the dvds, but maybe I should stop...

That $46.49 is for the 4 Next Gen movies---less than $12 a-piece!

I've had a few friends buy really cheap Blu-ray players and hook them to STANDARD def TVs because they don't currently have the money for a nice HDTV.
But they are big-time movie/TV show collectors and they don't want to spend any more money on standard DVDs.

So they have the players & the Blu-rays and are watching them now in 480p and then when they get their HDTVs---they're all set and won't have to re-buy recent movies again on Blu-ray.
Plus of course you get to enjoy all the extra features that most Blu-rays have that the DVDs don't.

TNG Movies, that is. The series won't be on blu-ray any time soon thanks to the way it was produced. TOS was easily transferable to HD blu-ray. It's impossible to do the same with TNG as TNG's edited masters are on videotape as opposed to 35mm film, meaning the picture quality of the masters is the same as what you see on TV. TOS, being edited to 35mm film, actually has even better picture quality than what you can see on blu-ray.

The original TNG we all grew up with will never be in HD. The only way to get it in HD is to go back to the original film and put the entire series back into post-production, reediting every frame of film and adding new FX. THe music is all done, though. Still a daunting challenge to say the least.

I had heard that they were going to try to bring one episode of TNG up to HD by going back to the film stock and redoing the FX in 1080p.

But they never followed up with any report on what episode or if they even finished the experiment.

Some people think they will someday do this for the series, but I seriously doubt it.

I have heard the dollars per episode could be as much as hundreds of thousands per episode and they are way to cheap to do that, i don't think.

So thank god TOS was made when it was and that the movies are on film.

And if you're an 'Enterprise' fan---you're in luck!
I'd bet good money that series will be out in Blu-ray before July 2010.

Im curious, had you seen 2001 on dvd prior, or had you seen it only on vhs? i have it on dvd and i am wondering if its worth my upgrading that one to blu-ray.

Oh, my God, you have no idea. :)

Yes, I owned 2001 on DVD. It's one of my top two or three movies of all time. Not only does the blu-ray absolutely blow away the DVD, but out of all the blu-rays I've seen so far, it's probably the best transfer I've yet seen (although Casablanca comes close, I think). So if any movie is worth upgrading to blu-ray, 2001 is.

Remember the scene where Floyd (I think that was his name) was reading the instructions for the zero-G toilet? I can actually pause the image and read the tiny print. I can't remember if it was legible on the DVD, but it's crystal clear on the blu-ray.

Blu-ray.com's review perfectly echoes my thoughts:
First, a few technical notes: 2001: A Space Odyssey was filmed in 70mm in the 2.2:1 aspect ratio. The film was shown around the country in various Cinerama theaters, projected onto huge, curved screens. Probably for this very reason, Kubrick chose to give the film a very crisp and clean cinematographic look. Fortunately, these technical choices, made forty years ago, render 2001: A Space Odyssey stunningly on Blu-ray. Having seen the film on several occasions in 70mm, this Blu-ray presentation is very much consistent with how I viewed the film theatrically. The film has a very clean, almost sterile look. Much of the film takes place in entirely white or black environments with the odd spacesuit providing a welcome splash of color in many scenes. However, there are a number of vivid sequences that feature an abundance of rich color. The opening “Dawn of Man” sequence seems to have been shot entirely at magic hour. The resulting shots are beautiful and really show off this discs flawless handing of color. Just about every scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey looks as though it could have been filmed yesterday. The print is flawless and the images are truly spectacular. This is a must own title on Blu-ray and is the very definition of reference grade.
I should say, though, that I'm not a videophile, it's just my opinion. I found "Patton" to have an incredible picture, though some people have apparently found it wanting. If you get a chance to rent 2001, do it just to see for yourself.

I had heard that they were going to try to bring one episode of TNG up to HD by going back to the film stock and redoing the FX in 1080p.
Actually, I don't think they even said that much. They were going to explore the possibility of TNG on blu-ray, but exactly what their plans were they never revealed. And that was a year or so ago, anyway, and we haven't heard anything further.

Some people think they will someday do this for the series, but I seriously doubt it.
Don't be too sure. Yes, getting TNG to HD is not going to be easy or cheap, but Paramount knows there's a market just waiting for it. I've no doubt that they haven't yet given up on it. It's probably going to take a while, and may not be quite what some fans want -- say, a collection of the top five episodes. But I'm certain it will happen at some point. Paramount just has to figure out a way to make it cost effective.

I'm passing on the TNG movies for now. I was a little disappointed in the PQ of the original movies set. And, I'm not as excited about TNG as I used to be, but if Costco has a rebate, I might bite. Or, I just change my mind - that's a man's prerogative, right?
;)
I locked in to Season 2 at $72.99. I wonder why they're charging more for 2 than 1? Maybe they discovered it was more popular than they thought it would be.

Anybody planning on buying Season 2 on blu ray in a couple weeks? I know for sure I'm going to, I can't wait for it! It actually has my very first favorite episode, Trouble with Tribbles!

Part of me is glad to hear that. I just started buying the dvds, and would be annoyed at the prospect of buying them again in bluray. For TOS that's fine, but not for the shows I'm less psyched about...

Well, my PS3 Slim should be here today or tomorrow, and my 54" Panasonic Plasma should be available at the end of the month, so I'll soon be shopping, yet again, for TOS (now in blu-ray) I'll definitely be buying the TOS 6-movie set, and I'll start rewatching my standard def DVDs of TOS series, until I finally break down and buy, buy, buy the Blu-ray editions (thanks also to Mike Okuda for the recommendation)

man named Gorn, I knew and worked with a man named Gorn, Dave Gorn for many years, nice name :)

Yeah, I'm not that big a TNG fan these days. I'll gonna pass on all the movies right now and spend my spare change on TOS blu-ray.

I'm wondering about the TOS movies on bluray. Several Amazon reviewers weren't happy, and suggested another version will be coming out. True?

I doubt it. I think they rushed to get the BD set out around the release of the new movie. The conversation probably went like this:

Paramount Exec: "Let's release those Star Wars movies to coincide w/ Abrams' movie..."
Technician: "It's Star Trek."
PE: "Whatev...Blu-Ray is the hot thing now."
T: "But we only have old masters done for DVD, w/ EE and DNR applied."
PE: "I don't understand this crazy language you're speaking. How much will it cost to fix that?"
T: "$xxx,xxx.00 and 6 more months."
PE: "Are you nuts? Just release them the way they are now. Strike while the iron is hot. Those crazy fans will lap it up like warm milk. We can always fix them and release 'Collectors' Editions' in a couple of years, when the next movie comes out. Then we can get them to buy them again."
T: "whimper...."
