TOS movies announced for Blu-ray !!

guardian

Commodore
In Norway  Scheduled for May 13 (I imagine the new movie comes out there a little later)

A really weird method they are using for the Norway release.....

Movies 1-3 in a box set and 1, 2, 3, 4, & 6 available individually with TFF missing in action !!!

Can this mean they plan to release TFF later with new FX ?? Why else skip it if not for a later release with something significant added?

Anyway check out the Digitalbits.com site for full info on this......

If that format of release holds for the U.S. I'm thrilled...........

We'll be able to buy the movies individually meaning we can skip, for example, TMP until they possible release the DC at a later date or whatever movie a fan doesn't happen to like can be skipped.

Very nice to be able to pick and chose without being forced to buy a box set.

I just wonder though does perhaps the "Movie Trilogy' refer to Treks 2-4 and NOT 1-3?

That would make more sense to me.
At any rate we'll probably have the US release announced in the next 2-3 weeks tops........

There has been an update on this news this morning on the Digital Bits. For the US there will be a Blu-Ray Box set with ALL six TOS movies including TFF. It sounds like for this initial release you will only be able to buy the movies in a box set in the US. Here is the info and link:

Okay, we've got a major Star Trek Blu-ray update for you this morning. As you know, select release details and cover art images have leaked from European studio sources this week (see our post from yesterday), but there's been conflicting information as to what exactly the release will entail here in the States. In order to answer these questions, we've checked in repeatedly with Digital Bits and Trek Movie industry sources and we're now able to bring you accurate, updated details. Keep in mind that none of this is official until actual studio announcements are made, and these details are still subject to change. But here's the latest...

As originally reported back in November on The Digital Bits, Star Trek I-VI will be released on Blu-ray in the U.S. in May in a 6-film "Kirk/Spock" box set, each with remastered picture and sound. This set will include Star Trek V here in the States, though other regions may offer different disc configurations/packaging options. Star Trek I, II and IV will each be the original theatrical versions. (If I'm not mistaken, this would mark the first time that The Voyage Home has EVER been available on home video in its theatrical version - even on VHS - and the first time that The Motion Picture has been available in its theatrical version since its initial VHS release. Note that we also expect the remaining Next Generation films to be released in a 4-film Blu-ray box set at a later date.) At least some new extras have been created for this release, including "famous fan" commentary tracks for each film, as well as a featurette offering select scenes from a Klingon performance of Hamlet by the Commedia Beauregard (filmed in St. Paul, Minnesota - see the group's original press release and this previous report at Trek Movie). It's unknown yet whether these will be BD-exclusive, or if there will be a simultaneous standard DVD release.

I think Star Trek IV is a typo; it should probably say Star Trek VI instead.

I'm taking everything with a grain of salt until the final announcement.

But Bill Hunt then goes on to specifically say, "...this would mark the first time that The Voyage Home has EVER been available on home video in its theatrical version - even on VHS - and the first time that The Motion Picture has been available in its theatrical version since its initial VHS release." Of course, that is totally incorrect in every way. While there are 2 versions of Trek IV (the European prints included a prologue) the US theatrical cut has always been on home video. This is the kind of mistake you make when you flip roman numerals and don't do enough research.

As for TMP, the widescreen laserdisc and VHS were the theatrical cut, even after the "Special Longer Version" was already available on both formats.

Totally shoddy & inept reaserch for the quasi-announcement....

Virtually everybody knows that Voyage home has only been released in the thearical version in the U.S. so it's not just interposing numbers.......

AND he totally ignores & glosses over the fact that the Director's cuts of 1, 2 & 6 won't be available this time, setting up another outrageous double-dip and he says all this like it's supposed to be some victory for the Trek fans.
No, it's just another butt-f*ck by Paramount.

Oh, & it's only availble in a box set, so you can't just buy 3, 4 & 5 separately and then wait for the alternate versions of 1, 2 & 6 later.

thanks for nothing..........

Bill Hunt has since corrected the page to say "The Undiscovered Country" but he still gets his info regarding TMP wrong. It wasn't just the initial VHS and LD, Bill, that were the theatrical cut. The last LD (released in 1991) was the first time the movie was released letterboxed and it was the theatrical cut.

I think he must be a shill for the studios rather than an advocate for the fans...............

There is NO justification for 'theatrical version only' releases and then later 'director's cut' versions.

Both or multiple versions are easily placed on Blu-rays as the recent King Kong shows BOTH 187 minute version & the 200 minute version on the same disc and it plays flawlessly. TWOK & TUC only have a measly 3 & 1/2 minutes added for the director's cuts and both movies are under 2 hours.

The fans should unite on this point and not break off into, "I'm glad my version will be available and I don't care about the other version."

That's just selfish AND short-sighted because it will be your turn to burn next time.

There are plenty of "theatrical version only" purists out there who detest all Director's Editions. For them, this would be a victory.

Well, there's definitely one for The Motion Picture, because the Director's Edition doesn't exist above standard definition, while the Special Longer Version is missing optical work. (By carefully choosing the 4:3 area, they fudged most of the issues, but in widescreen it would be extremely noticeable.)

And we don't know whether or not the same is true for the other versions that were only assembled for home video previously. Especially TUC--I believe that TWOK was straight added scenes, but TUC involved some optical work in the mind-meld scene, I thought.

And even if there were no justification, where do you get off calling Bill Hunt a shill? He certainly didn't attempt to offer one--all he did was report what information he had.

So, given this information, does this mean the films have been given high definition makeovers/restorations, a la TOS:Remastered (without the new F/X) or are these just Blu-Ray versions of the same mediocre transfers that we already have for the DVD releases?

If not, then definitely pass. I'll wait for a much better looking edition later on... For now, my DVD's will do nicely, thank you.

The real victory would be to use the immense storage space of Blu-Ray to have all three versions with full digital restoration so that people can choose which one they want to see without having to make decisions/compromises on which version of a movie to get. Heck, with the branching video trees that seem to be showing up on some releases, it's not even as if it would take substantially more room, since you don't need to have 3 movies of storage space, just the common scenes with the diverging bits added on.

I still would have preferred the Special Longer Version to be released on DVD/BluRay. But the Theatrical Version is fine, too. I'm glad that the Directors's Cut won't make it.

Regarding TWOK, I like the Director's Cut a lot more than the Theatrical Version. I also found The Director's Cut of TUC better, except for the flashbacks during the mindmeld scene. They could make a version for BluRay which is basically the Director's Cut, but using the old version for the mindmeld. I think that would satisfy most fans.

I like the theatrical version of TMP, but I would like to see the director' edition too as that one has better pacing. The special longer version is OK if they cut out the whole "Kirk in the wrong spacesuit" sequence.

As for TUC, I much prefer the theatrical version. I didn't like the Scooby Doo ending and the Oliver North clone character in the video version.

One voice of sanity among the selfish "I won !", "I Lost" mentality............

The storage space of a BD 50 Blu-would easily, Easily hold all 3 version of TUC, both versions of TWOK & at least the Thearical & SLV version of TMP.

Instaed of ANYONE being happy they won or someone lost, everybody should feel cheated, because believe me next time you'll be on the other end.

For example, when the Director's cuts fiannly appear they will contain lots of features that won't be on this 'first dip' version and a lot of folks will be dissappointed in not having those.

I don't have a Blu-ray player, so I'm a winner all around. By the time I finally get one, they'll probably have released the double-dip versions, and I'll have saved myself a fistful of dollars and all this wailing and gnashing of teeth. ;)

That would of course be the best solution for us fans, but you know as well as I do that they will never ever release all versions on one disc when they can sell two or three seperate discs instead. Personally, I'd like all versions of all movies, even if it's just for completion's sake. The only movie I'd never buy again is TMP DE, because I totally dislike the idea of redone FX.

You have a good point there! I don't have a BluRay Player nor an HDTV Set, so I could actually be very relaxed about it all ...
