TOS Klingons or new?

Forgive me, but I think I prefer my Klingons as pirates, as privateers, as oily Fu Manchu villains with, yes, a streak of nobility, but without all the extended Samurai "warrior honor" and all that.

They have warp, so there ain't no Prime Directive concern. Can we not stand in judgement? I don't care what their foreheads look like but, back in the day, at least we didn't have some bizarre religio-politico philosophical back story, by which we had to respect cultural beliefs that made fleet promotion by assasination acceptable, etc. To quote ST novelist Diane Duane, "We made a treaty with THAT?"

Kudos to Kor, and his mindest is more than enough to satisfy me. I like my Klingons evil and my Romulans Roman (though that's for a separate thread).

Who's with me?

Hear, Hear.

Don't give me any of that, good day to die, robble robble, blood wine, robble robble, he has no honor garbage.

I hate modern Klingons.

:scream:

Most modern Klingons bite except Worf: he rocks very hard!

Meh, look at Gowron: he was talking about honor and all that and he was a little slimeball in platform heels with pop-eyes and a diet of scenery! Always looking to screw someone over, as DS9 showed.

Kern was pain in the neck, too, with all the whining about honor, but unlike Worf, he came across as a crybaby punk.

Lersa and Beator (spelling) were just plain nasty, even if they did have nice racks! :D

Kahless Clone (TNG) was outstanding, but does he count as new or old, since he was a clone? The original was just plain evil on TOS ep, but he was really Kirk's IMPRESSION of what he was like, so I'm confusing myself even more. Not hard to do! :guffaw:

Agreed. Aside from Worf, I couldn't stand the 24th century Klingons. All that "honor and tradition" stuff was cool and interesting the first time we saw it in "Heart of Glory", but gradually they started becoming more and more like the American Indians of Star Trek, and just didn't seem dangerous anymore.

You speak like honor is a dirty word.

Yes, I too liked the old school, Mongol-like TOS Klingons MUCH BETTER then the semi-bushido Samurai versions from TNG forward.

Pirates and privateers??? Never saw them as that. At least not in the TOS episodes. Otherwise I agree.

Yeah, they reminded me more of Nazis than pirates. They were fascists and had a strict military culture.

Nobody better be dissing my guys Martok and Gowron.

That being said, Klingons were always a lot more fun as villains. It was pathetic that Roddenberry actually considered replacing them with the Ferengi at the start of TNG as the next great Trek villain. :wtf:

And was it any coincidence that DS9's ratings went up when they brought in the Klingon factor and broke the Khitomer Accords? I think not.

It was unfortunate that the limitations of the various series could not allow for a deeper exploration of the Klingon/Fed alliance seen in TNG and later. I think we could have gotten some interesting shows on the clash of cultures.

I'm all about the OG Klingons. The Mongol hordes under a totalitarian regime, the New Soviet Man in space. Far more compelling than the latter-day Samurai Vikings.

I forgot about Martok. You're right, he was cool. And there were a few other good characters post-TNG too, but as far as the overall depiction of the Klingon race, I preferred TOS.

I beg pardon; that's what they were specified as in the original writer's guide and TMoSt.

Yeah, me too. Moore really dropped the ball on this one, giving us a dumbed down version of the Ford Klingons.

Sorry but it don't mean a thing if it ain't on the screen. They were written as stand-ins for the Soviets. The whole pirate angle seems to have been pretty fast. Kor, Koloth, Kang and the rest were never written that way.

Hmmm....I don't like the Klingons anymore. I was watching TNG's A MATTER OF HONOR last night, and thinking, wow, what a race of mall-rat haired, carcass-chewing scumbags.

Kor was cool. John Colicos rules.

How many boards could the Mongols hoard
If the Mongol hordes got bored?

(sorry, just had to...)
