After several 5YM novels and last month's look at the early years of the Federation we continue our backwards slide through history with Dayton Ward's From History's Shadow, due July 30th. In a narrative apparently split between the 20th and 23rd centuries we'll get a closer look at Gary Seven side-kick Roberta Lincoln and Captain Wainwright from DS9's Little Green Men.

Blurb:

2268: Following the encounter with the mysterious Gary Seven in the twentieth century, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is startled by two intruders who have transported through space and time from Earth circa 1968. Incredibly, one of the infiltrators is a Vulcan, who asserts that he’s lived among Earth’s population for over a decade. The other represents a little-known race, and reveals to Captain James T. Kirk that she has spent the last twenty years working to bring about humanity’s destruction. It is then that Gary Seven’s young protégée, Roberta Lincoln, arrives seeking Kirk’s help. . . .

1947: In the wake of the infamous “Roswell Incident” involving a crashed alien craft and beings from another world, Captain James Wainwright finds himself recruited as one of the first members of Majestic 12, a secret organization with two goals: Collect evidence of extraterrestrial activity on Earth, and develop strategies to combat alien invaders. And it is this very mission that will consume Wainwright’s life for the next two decades, driven by the knowledge that the danger is as real as the aliens living among us. . . .

Awaiting its arrival. This has the potential to be a good story.

Re: TOS: From History's Shadow by Dayton Ward Review Thread (Spoilers!

I actually thought the entire novel was set in the 20th century; I really find stories set during TOS off-putting for some reason. Do any of the other "Little Green Men" characters appear besides Wainwright? I really liked the general played by Charles Napier.

Re: TOS: From History's Shadow by Dayton Ward Review Thread (Spoilers!

Well, as a certain other well-known extraterrestrial would say, I'm waiting "with a worm on my tongue."

Perhaps it will arrive before the LV Con.

Re: TOS: From History's Shadow by Dayton Ward Review Thread (Spoilers!

Will this storyline conflict with Cox's rise and fall of Khan?

Re: TOS: From History's Shadow by Dayton Ward Review Thread (Spoilers!

First reader to chime in. I enjoyed it muchly. It had the broad scope of Cox's "Khan" books, which Ward acknowledged he was going for. The portion set on the Enterprise was the weaker of the two, but it was a darn fine yarn nonetheless.

I half expected Mulder and Scully to show up.

Missed voting on the poll, but I'd say above average.

I just have to say that is one fantastic cover. :techman:

Not really a spoiler to say that one alien whose presence on Earth we do know about didn't make an appearance. Of course we don't know that she was there in the 20th century, just the 19th.

Downloaded to my Kindle while I was asleep (now that's what I call shopping). Not sure if I'll have time to get any reading in today.

Dayton has posted an entry for the book on his blog:

In addition to providing a permanent home for links to find and order the book, this entry also will serve as the book’s “official” Q&A thread. Those of you who want to chat about the book, feel free to post your questions/etc. to the comments section.

waiting for my book to come in the mail son..Defcon thanks for posting the link to Dayton Ward's site that certainly was interesting reading about his ideas for writing this novel.

Re: TOS: From History's Shadow by Dayton Ward Review Thread (Spoilers!

I always love Dayton's work and am looking forward to reading this one. This question is for anyone that's already read this one. I'm curious, does this novel build on any of Greg Cox's work from this timeframe where I should read those novels before starting this one? How about The Aliens Are Coming that Dayton mentioned on his blog, should I read that one before starting?

Thanks.

Ward's book is done "in the spirit" of the Cox works but you needn't have read the latter to fully appreciate the former. But you should do so in any case.
