TOS forum regulars : Did you like the new movie?

Wow.

So, I just saw the first 10 minutes, up to the end of the pre-credits act.

That was *horrible*! Seriously, *this* is the movie everyone's raving about? It was just so stupid.

You can argue that Trekkies are pointy-headed nerds that hate canon violation, but this is just a dumb movie.

From your viewpoint, just like from mine it's enjoyable. We perceive things differently, you and I, and in your field of debris and detritus, I find diamonds and gold dust. ;)

Exactly how I felt.

So much as I enjoyed the movie as a kick ass summer flick, I'm getting the dreadful sensation that Trek as I know it, in either continuity, is finally dead. What remains, what may come from the ashes of this may be entertaining, may be enjoyable, but it won't be My Trek!

I thought the same way you did before seeing it. I felt that I might not be able to pop on one of my TOS DVDs and enjoy an episode.

But, I was wrong. The essence is there, fun and entirely likeable characters. Og knows the plot holes are huge, that there's so much there solely to setup a new generation of Trekkies but so what? I liked it, and I'm still enjoying TOS/TAS.

Can't wait for a sequel either :)

I'm half-way through now. Watching it with a friend who is in his mid-20s and has only seen (and loved) TOS. We're laughing at how dumb the movie is.

My wife walked in during the first Sulu scene and rolled her eyes in disgust. Yeah, this is a plausible Starfleet officer.

Oh, and thank you, Lt. Uhura, for being so forthcoming with your earthshattering news.

Stupid movie.

I haven't followed this whole thread, but you're not watching this in a movie theater?

Nope. Downloaded it. Off the net. The a/v synching was bad so I stopped halfway through.

Your opinion and tastes and you're more than entitled to them. But I thought the Narada/Kelvin/Kirk's birth prologue was pretty kickass myself. Not perfect, but a great kickoff for the movie.

And not only are you entitled to *your* opinions, but I generally enjoy reading about them :)

 Thanks. I guess that's all I can ask for sometimes!

But yeah...I had issues with the film. Not ones large enough to keep me from liking it, but some things bugged me. It wasn't perfect by a light year, if you pardon the pun.

No.

Warped 9, it's good to see you around, I saw your review, it was a masterpiece

I agree with most of your opinions generally, but I found this new film such a breath of fresh air compared to Berman-Trek. Yeah it was very silly in parts and the last half needed a polish, but it could have been so so so much worse!

The trailers had lowered my expectations so much that what I got on the night was a nice surprise. Also, I knew there would be no plausible explanation for a cadet to take command of the Enterprise, so however they served it up, I made the decision to mentally switch off and go with it.

Having had a few weeks to digest it, I am still a bit disappointed that Nimoy's scenes weren't as good as the opening 40 minutes.

Now that everything is set up I think there may be a few good films ahead of us.
