TOS forum regulars : Did you like the new movie?

(like what was Nero doing for 25 years?)

Sitting in Rura Penthe. I assume that after George Kirk rammed the Kelvin into the Narada, the Klingons swooped in and captured him and perhaps the ship. This could explain why everyone in 2258 knew the Vulcans and Romulans shared a common ancestry and perhaps why technology appeared to be more advanced; that the Klingons reverse engineered some of what was on the Narada and it trickled over to the Federation.

Like I said, I've been out of the loop for a long time! I assume we'll get deleted scenes for the DVD release.

As a Trek fan since '66, I thought it was very, very good (but not quite great). My 15 year old son (who is mildly interested in Trek) called it the greatest movie ever - even better than any Star Wars, Lord of the Rings or X-Men films.

Ah, a gateway drug!

In spite of being heartbroken over the destruction of the two best Trek races (one in each timeline!), I loved the movie.

I loved it. But then I got home and started thinking about it. And I loved it a little less.

It was action packed, no doubt. And it was great fun seeing all the old characters again.
But I just couldn't get past the weak villain with his weak plan. That's hard for any movie to overcome. And the heroes didn't do anything creative to save the day. And it didn't really have a "Trek theme."

Blowing up 40 years of canon didn't bother me really. I just wanted a stronger movie at the core.

I'm a die-hard TOS fan that was dead-set against this movie when it was first announced...but I thought it was great. Sure, it had some flaws, but overall its the best Trek movie since TUC.

I thought the cast was solid all around, and it was great seeing Nimoy again.

I plan on seeing it again to get the full effect...But yeah, it was a great movie.

I was overwhelmed by it the first time (in the good way), and on my second viewing I was able to enjoy it to the fullest. Loved it, probably more than any Trek, film or series, since TUC. I appreciate the care with which they recreated the characters, so true to the spirit of the original. There were many moments in the film where the only thought that came to my mind was "This is wonderful" and I had a smile on my face.

I honestly loved it! The casting was awesome, the action was kick-@$$, and the story was really good!

Had great time. The opening scene was probably among the best in terms of emotional impact. Heck of a way to start a film.

LOVED IT!!! :techman::techman::techman:

I know some the plot elements were implausible...but dammit Jim...it was FUN!!! And the casting for this film was PERFECT! Saw it today on the IMAX after seeing it for the first time on a standard screen.

This will be the first movie I buy on Blu-Ray.

TOS fan since 1966 - loved the movie! It's got everything that Star Trek lost between TOS and ST:TMP, turned up to "11". Have seen it twice and will be seeing it several times more in the next couple of weeks.

Google Gen-Y's behavior/attitude in college and the workplace, and you'll see why a film aimed at them has such a plot and characterizations.

Ah, that younger generation - they never really measure up once you're not one of them in your heart any more, eh?
Nah, even when I was that age, I didn't think in those terms. Actually, I admire them for their easy acceptance of diversity -- having been their age in the 80s and early 90s, I find it refreshing to see young people so less polarized and snarky with one another. And they have a social consciousness that, at least on the surface, seems meaningful. But there's no doubt about the entitlement/self esteem on steroids thing. I've met many fine young people, but the narcissistic patterns that keep resonating among the rest are disturbing.

Saw it with my daughter, she's now a casual fan (best I could hope for..) she loved it. However, while waiting for the theater to be cleaned, we saw people leaving another showing in the same plex..most were in the pre-teen to early 20s and they all were wild about it and asking about TOS. The theater filled up when we were allowed in, those kids aged 10 to 20 were impatient to get through the advertising and get on with the film. During the movie it was quiet, with interest in the plot at the end of the film the audience clapped and cheered (as did I but quietly) So here we go, it's Trek with action and just a hint of technobabble with TOS's humor largely intact and easily the best Trek film since TUC. (Though the villain was weak..he didn't detract from the film like in Nemesis) A few plot holes and Canon was somewhat ignored (But TOS did that in spades anyway) Now, here's something telling, most stayed during the end credits, when we left, everyone was talking about how good a MOVIE it was.

About that time Wolverine let loose as well..and most of those that left were angry, bitter and upset complaining about the film as they left.

I only hope the take is good enough to offset the budget...

I've only seen it once, but I liked it quite a bit. :techman:

That having been said, it isn't going to displace TOS for me... but then again, no subsequent Trek movie or series has either. :D

I liked it quite a bit. So did my wife, who is not a fan. #1 son loved it, #2 son does not care for Trek but enjoyed this movie.

What I liked most is the fact that this movies does not take itself so damned seriously. It was made for fun, entertainment and to make money, nothing more.

I don't care about "canon", and hope that it's been erased for good in this new Trek universe. I hope this movie will open the door to lots of new stories...but no remakes, please.

It was fun, it was exciting, it was dumb, it was crap, it was stupid, it was breathtaking, it was entertaining, it was disappointing and it was promising.

So yes, I'm in two minds about.

I like the characters, the bright feel to it, the action, the pace, the comedy.

It is a dumb summer action flick with about as much thought applied to it as I do to breaking wind. The story was daft, about as much science applied to it as God at the centre of the galaxy in STV. It's nice to see the ship still moved at plot speed. A few minutes to Vulcan... time enough for Kirk to go skiing and still make it back to Earth in time to...

I want to headbutt the set designer. Who needs engineering, we'll film in a factory? Bloody daft, and the ships felt like a Tardis, bigger on the inside. World design was good though, liked future Earth and future Vulcan.

May get the DVD, if they release a non-epileptic version. I want to kick shaky-cam and lens flare guy repeatedly in the nuts until he throws up.

I loved the new versions of the characters though. Kirk and Spock were great, loved the new Uhura (complete with first name), Bones McCoy was brilliant, Sulu suitably swashbuckling, tolerated Jar Jar Scott (after all, the original was comic relief too), but I really wanted to slap Chekov. That accent was annoying.

EDIT: Have to say, even if they made it work better than any film since TWOK, still felt disappointed at yet another wheeling out of the demented villain with a superweapon plot. That was actually the most tiresome thing about it. But I guess if you're a nu-fan of nu-Trek, you won't have any o that other baggage.
