TOS Finale Episode

No clip shows.
I think it would have been excellent if the crew were met by First Federation diplomats who agreed to share some of their advanced technology with them. Or, some sort of "mirror" battle like the book I'm reading... only much cooler.

DC Comics Annual #2 (first series) works as the perfect final "episode" of TOS, for me. The crew is ending their five year mission and get diverted to Talos IV where the Klingons have taken over...

The only kind of finale I'd want is a big, lavish, but otherwise normal episode of the show. I hate series finales that put an end to the whole premise. The worst offender was Xena: Warrior Princess. Great show, awful way to end. That finale even put me off the re-runs, because it left such a bad taste.

My Daughter was like... "How come Kirk is always getting beat up in these movies?"
He gets beat up in every universe
By his best friend

Granted. Maybe it's just advances in film-making that makes it seem so much more brutal now.

Other than against Spock, in TOS Kirk's double-fisted hammer punch (to neck or kidneys), flying double-leg drop kick, and knife hand attack appear to have served him well, preventing his physiognomy from suffering as dreadfully as it does in Abrams-land... pretty much delivering the victory without so much damage.

Seeing the Klingons dealt with using all the tech that the Enterprise picked up along the way would have been nice as a three parter.

That would have been the first part.

None of that returning the Earth crap. No "ending". The 5-year mission isn't over yet. Just keep going. Whatever their last adventure, they complete the episode's storyline, then gather on the bridge as always for some banter. At the end, Kirk assumes his dashing captain's pose and just says "All right, helm... on to our next mission. Warp factor three." Cut to space, the Enterprise flies away from camera into the distance, to that wonderful trumpet fanfare they used at the end of Tribbles. Fade out, roll credits.

I couldn't agree more.

In retrospect, it's a good thing that TOS didn't have a proper finale. If everything had been wrapped tidily at the end, instead of the series ending abruptly, you probably wouldn't have a generation of fans lobbying to bring STAR TREK back . . . and ultimately succeeding.

"Bring back STAR TREK!"

"Huh? Didn't you see the final episode? They already gave us an ending."

It's better that Star Trek ended with the sense that the Missions "continued".

It fires the imagination that they were still having adventures.

TOS Kirk beats up Khan who is five times stronger, NuKirk's punches don't even ruffle NuKhan's hair. Who said genetic engineering was illegal in the Prime world????

I suppose they could have done what Sue Thomas: F. B. Eye did at the end of their last episode:

Except so far, that really was the end. No new made-for-TV movie installments or anything.

I always thought the animated episode "The Counter-Clock Incident" could have formed the basis for a great final episode. It covers the history of the Enterprise itself, it has an interesting dilemma and it has an interesting message. Having said this, the script would need work to flesh out it to an hour which hopefully would include more stuff for the regular cast to do.

LOL the irony is in STTMP if it wasn't for Decker, Spock and Iliya the ship would have been blown to pieces with Kirk in charge. He added nothing to that mission except acting like a spoilt child 'They gave her back to me' pathetic. Reboot Captain Pike had more class.

Um no. Not Decker nor Ilia.

Had Kirk not been there and Decker been in charge, the ship would have had the same fate as the three Klingon ships at about the same point in the encounter with the cloud. Decker would have raised shields which would have been interpreted by VGER as hostile. Decker would then have gone in guns blazing just like the Klingons.

Ilia contributed nothing to the safety of the Enterprise. She was quickly killed and replaced by the VGER probe. Even that probe's connection to Decker really didn't matter all that much.

Only Spock meaningfully contributed to the safety of the Enterprise all through the mission. Spock figured out the initial message, Spock transmitted the proper NASA codes and Spock mind melded with VGER. He's the one that saved the ship.

Kirk would have ended up merging with VGER after manually inputting the final code. That was Decker's contribution.

Well, that and the overriding decision to fire the photons instead of phasers at the asteroid during the wormhole sequence.

A sign of a great Captain is surrounding himself with competent subordinates. Kirk inspired the bridge crew far more than Decker.

Re: TMP and how useless Kirk was, this whole debate is only happening because the film had such a bad script. :ack:

Edit: now that I think of it, GR tried to de-canonize The Original Series in his introduction to the TMP novel. I would much rather de-canonize TMP (call it a fuzzy approximation of events, at most) and keep the TOS version of James T. Kirk intact. TOS should say to TMP, "Double dumb ass on you !"
