TOS-era Insignia

With a subtle reminder that the Intrepid had an all Vulcan crew.

That's the main reason I was asking; my oldest son is creating a TOS Vulcan costume for attending local sci-fi conventions, and he was curious as to the validity of any given Intrepid insignia that he might find. ;)

I have always taken the Intrepid insignia with the IDIC as official. Just makes sense to me, and...it also goes along with the idea that each fleet has an insignia. If we take Enterprise as belonging to the First fleet and serving UESPA for Earth. Her insignia is used for all ships assigned to that fleet. If Intrepid is assigned to the Vulcan whatever authority for Vulcan, then all ships under that fleet ( whatever it's number is ) carry that insignia.

I'd like to take this moment to claim the Seventh fleet for Destiny.

Now, in the Starship Exeter fan series, the Exeter had to take a trip to Andoria. I kinda like to think that Exeter belongs to the Andorian fleet, whatever it's number is. This might mean that the Exeter insignia had some kind of Andorian space agency origin.

Now, this has all been speculated on the BBS here over the last few months and possibly longer for some time. I like this idea. I think it makes sense. Each Conney in the small number that Kirk mentioned, I forget what it is - my TOS memory is failing me, could possibly represent the flagship the fleet it serves. Each of these fleets are assigned to the founding member worlds. Sure, that leaves a few as extra, they might be assigned to some other duty. I also think it's okay for there to be a number of ships that have their own insignias and operate independently of the rest of the fleets at large.

By the way, I am not much of a Photoshop'er. If anyone of you kids is so inclined, I sure would appreciate a little help with a higher quality version of my Destiny insignia. And... if not, that's okay.

I based my Intrepid insignia on the Vulcan Salute. I thought using the Idic symbol was a bit too obvious.

I did a few emblems in the style of those shown in the ST Encyclopedia:

L-R: Emblems for the Spitfire, the Enterprise (of course) and the Harlequinn (there is a model, but no-one's ever going to see that one... ;))

I could give it a go, what do you have in mind?

If someone talented can do justice to the pix of the patches in this thread I would be very grateful and of course, full credit where it is due.

AH! A topic near and dear to my heart. Here are some images I've compiled over the years, some of which have been covered here, others not...

IIRC, the only canon TOS badges were:

1: the delta-shield used by the Enterprise crew, plus others whose affiliation was apparently not the Enterprise in "Court Martial" and "The Menagerie, Part II".

2: Commodores Wesley, Stocker, Barstow, Stone and Mendez, as well as Admirals Komack, Fitzgerald and Westervliet wore the starburst-style insignia. (As did Starfleet prosecutor Areel Shaw and Miss Piper.)

3: Commodore Decker wore the pretzel-shaped insignia in "The Doomsday Machine"

4: Captain Tracey wore the upright rectangular insignia in "The Omega Glory"

5: There were various other insignias and/or patches worn by other guest cast, representing other units. Among these, the most spectacular was probably the "hand" insignia worn by penal colony personnel during "Dagger of the Mind" and "Whom Gods Destroy".

There was never a canon reference to a specific insignia for the Intrepid. Any insignia that has been associated with the Intrepid was merely non-canon fan conjecture. Any assertion that insignia are designated for specific space vessels is also non-canon, supported by the producers apparently stated intent, but contradicted by on-screen evidence. (See #1, above.)

If fans are going to speculate, then speculate we shall: I say the famous delta-shield indicated that the Enterprise, and possibly other vessels, were part of the First Fleet or some wing therein. Other insignia would therefore belong to other fleets or wings therein, and the starburst would be Starfleet Command flag hierarchy.

I was going to ask about what was seen on-screen.

I could never find any of those non-Enterprise ones on Google.
